As the banquet draws near, Maomao finds herself struggling to present someone with a beauty so mesmerizing that the foreign envoys would mistake her for a Moon Spirit. Determined to find inspiration, she ventures to the northern part of the rear palace, where a pond serves as the backdrop for upcoming performances. There, she encounters Shisui, and thanks to her deep knowledge of insects, she stumbles upon a breakthrough idea.
On the day of the festival, the two striking foreign envoys make their appearance, their true intentions shrouded in mystery. It soon becomes apparent that they are not merely here to witness the Moon Spirit. One of them even boldly approaches the emperor, revealing a plan for herself and her sister to grow closer to him and his brother. However, their direct approach does not yield the desired results. As they make their way back, they are granted a glimpse of an unparalleled beauty, one unlike anything they have seen before.
Maomao’s ability to devise and flawlessly execute her plan once again highlights her intelligence. She even took the time to learn the envoys’ language, ensuring her message was fully understood. Thanks to her efforts, Jinshi transformed into the best of the beauties that he is.
The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Episode 6 Review
Problems are brewing within the palace as the fact that Maomao can make medicine is revealed to one of the palace women. As only medical officers are allowed to make medicine, what Maomao is doing is considered illegal. Things can be grave, and the punishment can be severe. But when Maomao meets the palace woman, her request and information send Maomao to a completely new conspiracy.
It has been days since one of the maids from Lady Lihua’s palace has gone missing after catching a cold. This is a problematic situation, as the maid can transfer that sickness to her lady. However, she also runs the risk of being gravely neglected because of her situation. Thus, Maomao gets asked to look into the matter and make sure the poor maid gets some sort of assistance.
The problem here is that Lady Lihua’s palace is entirely controlled not by Lady Lihua but by her headmaid, Shin. She is also Lady Lihua’s cousin and a high-ranking noble herself, giving her the power to not explain herself to anyone lower than her. Nothing goes in or out without her confirmation, not even information. In such a case, why is she trying to hide a sick maid, keeping her locked in a place where no one is supposed to enter?
Today’s episode had many layers, and many secrets unfolded. We get a first-hand glimpse at the pathetic lives lower-level maids lived and learn how their lives held no meaning to the nobles. Very few were empathetic towards their servants and actually cared whether they died or lived. But that was not all, Lady Lihua was also hiding a huge secret, and now, we know why her well-being is so important more than ever.
Verdict
I love today’s episode and appreciate the details that we get from this anime about how the palace works. Maomao might showcase that she is cold, but it is apparent that she cares about people and can’t stand those who take advantage of others. Towards the end, the emperor takes an interest in Maomao, and hopefully, we will see in the next episode why.
