The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Episode 3 Recap

In this episode, Maomao’s keen intellect shines as she deftly avoids a perilous situation, being wrongly implicated in an absurd accusation of murder. The conspiracy begins when Jinshi approaches her with inquiries about mushrooms, a common yet potentially dangerous ingredient in the inner palace. While widely consumed, few are aware of the lethal varieties that grow among them. Complicating matters, an unusual abundance of mushrooms has appeared in the back gardens, accompanied by a foul odour, raising further suspicion.

Meanwhile, a deeper conspiracy brews among the king’s lower-ranking consorts. Lady Tao, a woman who had finally secured a respectable marriage proposal from a high-ranking official, has vanished without a trace. Though harem rules generally forbid marriage, women whom the king has neglected over time are occasionally permitted to leave. Lady Tao was one such case, until her sudden disappearance.

However, she is not the only one who has met a troubling fate. Lady Jin, a consort from a powerful family, has mysteriously died within the palace walls. Adding to the enigma, she was previously accused of poisoning Princess Lingli and had a notorious reputation for jealousy and cruelty. Bitter over the emperor’s lack of interest in her, she frequently tormented her servants and schemed against others.

Today’s episode is once again filled with many interesting things that will unfold completely in the next episode. In the beginning, we see how Lady Gyokuyou received a gift from the foreign envoys, and it was a mirror, which was quite an exotic item in those days. Not only she but the other three very important concubines of the king also received this very precious gift, and we learn how it is not even made in Maomao’s country. Only the royals can afford such an item as it is only available in the West.

Later, we find Gaoshun coming to Maomao with a very fascinating riddle. He claims it is the problem of a friend of his, but it is apparent to Maomao and the audience that there is more to his story. His inquiry is regarding one of his friends whose two very shielded daughters land themselves in unspeakable trouble. Here, Gaoshun needs to find out how one of them managed to get out of their strict environment. Though Maomao becomes certain that there is something fishy about this whole scenario, she says nothing about it.

On the other hand, Jinshi calls upon Maomao for a different problem. Apparently, the foreign envoys that came this time had a very specific request. Fifty years back, there was a great beauty who enchanted the foreign envoy of that time and earned the name of Moon Spirit with her dancing. This time, the current envoys wish to witness the same magic happen. But Jinshi has no idea who this mysterious beauty from 50 years ago was and how she managed to do something that gave birth to a mystical lore.

Thankfully, Maomao, the palace detective, is there to solve every possible mystery. It is very interesting to see her deduce things and come up with facts that otherwise would not come to our minds. She truly is a very talented individual whose merits are now even acknowledged by the king himself. The way this episode ends signifies a very intriguing next episode, and it is something that I am specifically excited to see.
