Tastefully Yours Episode 1 Recap

The episode starts with Han Beom-woo going through his daily grind. As the conglomerate heir to the uber successful food company Hansang, he is dismissive of others and generally unliked by his employees. However, it is clear that he’s quite knowledgable about everything that constitutes his job and isn’t afraid to put others down for not being on par with him. On that note, he goes over to a business and blackmails the owner to sell it, something that another employee couldn’t do.

After giving Jang Young-hye a rather tough time, Beom-woo goes with Han Seon-woo to visit their mother, who is an equally cruel and strict person. She is quite annoyed by the lack of stars beside their fine dining restaurants and tells her sons that whoever brings the coveted three stars will be the next owner of Hansang. Later, when Beom-woo goes to taste their new signature dish, truffle neobiani, he learns that another restaurant has the same dish on their menu, sending him into a frenzy.

Desperate to get the three stars, he is taken aback when he learns that the dish is available at a small restaurant in Jeonju and rushes to put an end to it before the launch the next day. However, finding this unknown restaurant, that doesn’t even have a sign, proves to be difficult and he stumbles upon it after much walking around. Inside, he finds a quaint restaurant whose owner, Mo Yeon-joo, is frustrated at being interrupted during her chore time.

They immediately get into a verbal spat after he stepped on her cabbage earlier resulting in a frosty relationship. However, his brattiness is no match for her menacing mood! She sends him off to get a very rare beef rump and his attempts at conning her go in vain. They go on an adventure afterwards to find mushrooms in the hills, leading to Beom-woo returning utterly exhausted and confused. However, when he tries her food, he can’t help but become a fan of her talent.

He then tries to convince her to sell her restaurant and her recipes, but she shoots that down instantly even asking him some hard-hitting questions when he pushes too hard. Of course, all the talk of sincerity and passion doesn’t pay the bills, which Yeon-joo is reminded of the next morning when her landlady comes around to ask for the rent. On the other hand, Beom-woo gets the shock of his life when the restaurant owner he had threatened earlier attempts to take his own life, leaving him in a huge mess. At the office, he swiftly loses his job.

In an attempt to make amends, he rushes to the hospital to beg for forgiveness and learns that the owner pulled this stunt on purpose on Seon-woo’s advice. He tells his mother this, but she refuses to acknowledge anything. Left utterly defeated, he goes to meet Yeon-joo and is met with her frosty behaviour once again!

Tastefully Yours Episode 1: Kang Ha-neul
Tastefully Yours Episode 1: Kang Ha-neul

Kang Ha-neul and Go Min-si share a sweet chemistry in the first episode of Tastefully Yours, which promises light-hearted fun and some rivalry. The direction of the drama is quite clear at this point and without any shocking twists, this one’s going to be a simple watch. However, I think it will be warm and sweet. I liked the first episode, it balances the insanity with the seriousness quite well. You understand the characters at their starting points and will also be able to understand the trajectory of their character arcs as well.

All in all, the first episode is quite enjoyable. Kang Ha-neul is a good protagonist and is superbly entertaining as well. I think Go Min-si plays the perfect antethesis to his brat of a character. It will be fun to see them falling in love in the future!
