Superboys of Malegaon Review

There’s something very warm and cute about Superboys of Malegaon. It’s always nice to watch an underdog film about following your passions and Reema Kagti, who is well-known for some of the most entertaining and impactful movies of the decade, brings forth this story with a ton of heart. The little discussion surrounding the state of movies and piracy is also there, but this is mostly Nasir and his friends’ story and it’s nice to watch that rather than thinking about the state of Bollywood for once.

The film’s main narrative is a light and breezy affair but the series’ biggest win is probably the small and big aspirations of these young men belonging to a small town where nothing big really happens quite that often. It’s a story of you and me, full of our achievements and our dreams and a little bit about everything that we never quite got to. There’s an innocence in the air in Superboys of Malegaon that we somehow don’t see very often in any form of media anymore and after watching the 10th movie or show on murders, this one is quite the necessary addition for some much-needed respite.

The biggest win about the movie is that it plays its story genuinely and without much complexity. Small-town kids have big dreams, but their hearts and often not as complicated and that shows in every scene of this film. Of course, props for this go to its actors who do a fabulous job of bringing these characters to life. It’s hard to not smile looking at their antics, but it’s harder to not root for the kids when they find something that truly matters to them. It’s the blend of direction, writing and acting that makes this film stand out and even though the runtime is a bit too long, it doesn’t impact how you take the film that much.

However, this isn’t just a film about hopes and dreams. It’s also about friendships and fellowships, showcasing not just the shared dreams that these young men have, but also how close of a bond they share. It’s the sort of thing that is somehow lost in our complicated and fast-paced world, but there’s something genuine about the relationship between these characters that makes it hard for viewers to not believe in their shared goal. Of course, like any other friendship, it comes with its ups and downs, but, at the end of the day, these boys are there for each other and frankly that’s all that matters.
