In this Korean reality series, five multimillionaires showcase their extravagant lifestyles to the world as we see them shop, eat and have a merry time with the best that money can offer.

Super Rich in Korea showcases the lives of five different people from different backgrounds all finding a home in Korea. However, the fact that they are super rich makes their dreams coming true a bit more simple and easily accessible, making viewers of this reality TV show stop what they are doing and take a gander at the opulence that is being thrown at their faces. As something to watch and then forget, this reality TV show is well-made and more on the funny side – the hosts do a fantastic job of not making this a totally narcissistic mess.

The hosts are the best part of this show. Cho Sae-ho, BamBam and Mimi reflect our thoughts perfectly and are mostly left as confused as us as they watch people throwing money at things. And sure, no hate – all of these people are hard-working human beings who have earned these things. But it’s still very grating to watch the show, especially after the glam starts to fade after the first few episodes.

The question I kept asking myself is why am I watching this – we don’t get to go deep into who these people are, we just watch them buying stuff, talking about how much they spend every day on food and how big their homes are. It feels disjointed from reality and a little annoying after a while. The laughs sound fake and the showcase of opulence a little insulting, considering how millions of people worldwide are facing severe financial crisis right now.

The hosts are the funniest part of this show but they aren’t enough to cut through the odd self-obsession of the people we follow for 6 episodes. And sure, some of their life stories are sad and relatable but it’s hardly showcased to us except the very surface-level conversations. Plus, there is no warmth in these stories and they feel very forced and made up, so much so that even though you feel for the subject matter, you don’t feel what they are feeling because it feels scripted and ingenuine.

Episode 4 is a little funny, with the blind date being a humorous and sad little affair that will make you laugh as much as it will make you cringe. The way the participants are showcased and the storylines that we see feel disjointed and also make the people seem bratty and out of touch. Personally, going at least a little in-depth would’ve made watching this a bit more tolerable. But what we get right now just feels like I am revisiting Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, which is never a good thing.

Super Rich in Korea Review: Final Thoughts

super rich in korean review

Super Rich in Korea feels like a vapid and unnecessary show promoting multimillionaires without much to say. Sure, we see the money and how they don’t think twice before buying a house worth billions of won but we don’t see the people behind them. Who are these people without their lavish lifestyles? We, unfortunately, never get to know that. And the money-throwing attitude gets super old super fast since it feels directionless and random. There are some funny moments thanks to the hosts but it leaves much to be desired, especially in a climate where people are suffering all over the world.
