After seemingly failing their mission, the situation is in dire straits in Spy x Family Episode 5. Let’s see what the Forgers do to recover from their current position in this review!
Spy x Family Episode 5 Overview

Spy x Family, sometimes stylised as SpyxFamily, is an action and comedy anime based on a manga written by Tatsuya Endou and serialised in Shounen Jump+. The manga quickly became among the magazine’s most popular ongoing properties, and thus, an anime adaptation was inevitable. The anime adaptation is being tackled by Studios Wit and CloverWorks, and it would be an insult to your intelligence as anime fans to tell you the shows these two studios have made. You are already well aware.
The anime is being directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, who has previously served the same position in shows such as Dororo, HunterxHunter (1999), and Rurouni Kenshin. This episode of the show is also referred to as SpyxFamily Episode 5 and Spy Family Episode 5. You can read our review of the previous episode of the show right here!

Spy x Family Episode 5 Review- What Was The Point, Again?

From the dawn of the millennium, people have always been getting heated about popular anime online. No anime is safe, whether it is a classic like Cowboy Bebop or a somewhat controversial one to begin with, like School Days. At any given moment, a commenter is making their presence known online by calling your favourite anime “Mid”, and you can’t really do anything about it. All you can do is accept dissension and colourful opinions as a fact of life and move on. Contrarians always have and will always exist for everything.

That said, Spy x Family deserves a lot of criticism that is not “I hate popular things”. It is one of the least deserving anime to get this popular in a while, and at least in this writer’s opinion, it has a lot of flaws that just get glossed over because the show is so cute. Cuteness is fine and appreciated in most anime, but it shouldn’t be the only thing going on for a medium. Anya and Yor carry this show on their back through the power of sheer cuteness.

The latest was perhaps the greatest demonstration of the problems with this show. We get the results of Anya’s interview, then we don’t, then we wait a few minutes, and then we get it anyway. What was the point of that? What did waiting for two more minutes accomplish? Why did the show fake the audience out before doing nothing with that plot point and going another way? That was the theme of this episode- Pointless. No word could describe it better than this word does.

After that, the show went towards a distinct and quite entertaining plot point, involving Loid having to do a mission at the behest of Anya. The entire sequence was very well animated and quite creative at times. However, there still wasn’t a point to it all. It was a great showcase of the forces in support of and standing behind Loyd, and Anya’s face would be a reason for many to not look at it this way, but it wasn’t for me. Slice of Life shows can occasionally be great despite not having any progress associated with them, but this was supposed to be much more than a normal slice of life.

Do I believe that this is a cute and competent show that doesn’t deserve some of the hate it has been getting? Absolutely. Do I believe that this is the second coming of christ or that this is anything other than just a random fun show? Absolutely not. Watching this episode was an exercise in futility, mostly because its events could have been done in under 5 minutes if this were a better show. Oh well, maybe this was just a one-off and the show plans on being miles better in the next outings? Only time can tell us that.
Verdict
Spy x Family Episode 5 was an entertaining episode that could have been an email. While some of the plot choices were weird, the overall package was quite sweet and perfectly enjoyable for your average slice of life.
