Spy x Family Episode 4 Overview

Spy x Family, sometimes stylised as SpyxFamily, is an action and comedy anime based on a manga written by Tatsuya Endou and serialised in Shounen Jump+. The manga quickly became among the magazine’s most popular ongoing properties, and thus, an anime adaptation was inevitable. The anime adaptation is being tackled by Studios Wit and CloverWorks, and it would be an insult to your intelligence as anime fans to tell you the shows these two studios have made. You are already well aware.
The anime is being directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, who has previously served the same position in shows such as Dororo, HunterxHunter (1999), and Rurouni Kenshin. This episode of the show is also referred to as SpyxFamily Episode 4. You can read our review of the previous episode of the show right here!

Spy x Family Episode 4 Review- A Test Like No Other

When something is as consistently good as this show, it becomes harder and harder to talk about. What are you supposed to say when you are talking about the fourth episode when you’ve already talked about how good Yor is or how great the family dynamic is? Well, you either find new things to compliment or start thinking about things that bother you a little, despite not being that big of a deal in the large scheme of things. While the time for the second statement will surely come, let’s stay positive for another week.

This was the kind of episode that only a show like The one we are watching could have pulled off. A school interview might be a regular ordeal for any normal family if a little stressful. Meanwhile, it was life or death in the Forger household. Not only does Loid’s entire mission depend upon this interview, but in the same vein, their staying together and Anya having parents depends upon the success of the same. Needless to say, it wasn’t a very calm ordeal.

The anime also handled the test in a delightfully unique way. The representation of the academy, its teachers, and the leading faculty was great. The show also managed to introduce a few great new characters by way of this interview, who might prove to have good recurring roles later on in the show. While the show’s concept might indicate that the result of this interview was never in question, the happenings in this episode were good enough to make up for that fact.

The Forgers (Anya, Loid, and Yor) had some amazing tricks up their sleeves to pass all the tests laid in front of them by the elite academy. They ranged from benign to positively deadly, but they were nothing but a light workout for our main characters. Seeing them dodge these obstacles as a family and coming out of the other side bonded closer than ever has been great. Spy Family Episode 4 was another in the line of many that improved the family dynamic by quite a bit. If the thought of them separating a bit now, you know it is going to be a lot worse by the show’s end.

Another great thing about the show’s representation of characters is that it always lets Anya be a kid. Yes, she possesses this insane power of reading minds, and that does lead to some hilarious shenanigans, the show is never afraid of showing her fail or letting her grow through some stern talking to. It makes her real personality shine that much more, and her not being an insufferable know-it-all helps her be a likeable character, much more than many other child characters. Another great outing for the show!
Verdict
Spy x Family Episode 4 was another great episode to a show now boasting nothing but these. There were some hilarious moments here, followed by moments that showcased some great emotions. An elegant watch!
