Spy x Family Episode 11 Review: Success At Last

After taking another loss in the dodgeball game, Spy x Family Episode 11 sees things take a turn for the Forgers. Let’s see if it was a good one this time in this review!

Spy x Family Episode 11 Overview

Spy x Family Episode 11 Title

Spy x Family, sometimes stylised as SpyxFamily, is an action and comedy anime based on a manga written by Tatsuya Endou and serialised in Shounen Jump+. The manga quickly became among the magazine’s most popular ongoing properties, and thus, an anime adaptation was inevitable. The anime adaptation is being tackled by Studios Wit and CloverWorks, and it would be an insult to your intelligence as anime fans to tell you the shows these two studios have made. You are already well aware.

The anime is being directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, who has previously served the same position in shows such as Dororo, HunterxHunter (1999), and Rurouni Kenshin. This episode of the show is also referred to as SpyxFamily Episode 11 and Spy Family Episode 11. You can read our review of the previous episode of the show right here!

Spy x Family Episode 11 Review- Failing Upwards

Anya stare Spy x Family Episode 11

Seems like the last episode was the perfect time to talk about Anya’s continuous failures as a student at her academy. She has been bad at everything except giving hilarious facial expressions for the longest time; thus, any time she does something worth praising feels like a miracle. The show finally caved in and gave Anya a win in the latest episode, but somehow, this felt less earned and deserved than any of her previous failures. This came out of absolutely nowhere and was a highly surprising development in the show.

While no one can disagree that Anya has earned a break from the challenges of being a 5-year-old and is due at least some success, doing it in this manner felt like cheating. She only got to where she did because of her superpower, which she isn’t even able to use properly yet. She didn’t get anywhere with her normal abilities and is pretty lacklustre as a student, not even able to use her mind-reading powers to help her cheat properly. Her not having accomplished anything by herself yet makes this victory feel hollow.

However, Anya does have a one-track mind for helping achieve Loid’s goals. She always keeps Damian on her mind when doing anything, even though she has been shunned by him multiple times in the past. Contrary to the popular trope, Damian isn’t as bad as most rich and powerful brats are. He is very capable and earnest in his attempts to surpass his brother and get his father to pay attention to him, and I don’t doubt that everyone will wall up to him as the show moves further. Anya and Damian have a delightful relationship right now, with a lot of potential to boot.

This was another hilarious episode and, like most other episodes of the show, featured a lot of Anya reaction moments. The animation was solid, if nothing special, and the show finally dropped all its inhibitions of copying the music from the James Bond and Mission Impossible series, as this episode featured an almost note-for-note recreation of an iconic soundtrack. If that’s not on-the-nose enough for you, few things can be. The opening and ending themes have grown on me as the series has progressed, but whether they are changed in the second cour remains to be seen.

We are all along for a very long ride, that’s for sure. We are not even twenty percent of our way through the show’s goals, and there are a lot of stories left to tell. It is hard to predict where we’ll be a few months from now, even though the episodes themselves remain plenty foreseeable for the most part. If Spy x Family Part 2 is as consistent as the first half, we are all in for a great time with the show. After all, Anya will totally get to stay with Yor and Loid forever. Right?

Verdict

Spy x Family Episode 11 was a fun time that featured a highly unpredictable plot event alongside several other things that make sense with the direction the show is supposedly headed. Just a solid episode.

  1. Honestly, I loved the series showing that even though Anya isn´t anything special regarding academic feats, rather being just an actual, normal 5-year old girl, she´s an earnest, good person. She could be incredibly callous and cold, or incredibly adept at cheating and not trying at least to study or to accomplish herself to anything, having this otherwordly psychic advantage, but her character shows a true desire of helping those in need.
