The talented author Isuna Hasekura has written this remarkable series as a light novel, which is beautifully illustrated by Jū Ayakura. The story is directed by Takahashi Takeo and Sanpei Hijiri, and it follows the life of a travelling merchant who, one day, finds a young, naked woman sleeping in his carriage.

I have tried my best to keep the review as spoiler-free as possible, but there are certain elements that I had to mention to give proper feedback.

Spice and Wolf Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf Episode 4 Review and Recap – Lawrence’s Dream

In this episode, we meet the unfaithful merchant Zehren, who has again been invited by Lawrence. But Lawrence is not interested in chit-chatting with him. He has already understood and decoded the scheme behind Zehren’s idea and has decided to inform the Milone trading company about him. This is why Lawrence makes a person from the Milone trading company spy on him. This whole situation also takes Lawrence in front of the branch manager of the trading company, with whom Lawrence manages to crack a deal.
What Zehren is trying to pull is not a mere scam. He goes to potential merchants and approaches them with the same idea that he told Lawrence. Then the merchants, believing his words, buy silver coins and stack them up in the hope of the price of these coins going up. But in reality, the price of these coins will actually go down, and in that time, Zehren will be the one to buy everything from them. This whole ploy is also supported by Medio Trading Company, a rival of the Milone company.

If the information that Lawrence has provided is true, then Milone and Lawrence can get huge profits, which can finally go to Lawrence’s dreams of having his own store.
In this episode, we understand Lawrence a bit more. He is not just a travelling merchant with no dreams or aspirations. He too, wants to settle down and have a family, and this is why, he just like any normal merchant, wants to open a store at a proper place, so that he doesn’t have to travel all year long.
But if he stops travelling, what will happen to Holo? She left everything behind and came to travel with Lawrence, but now that she knows Lawrence has his own dreams, she again becomes afraid of loneliness.

Here, we learn just how lonely a life Holo had to endure. She will stay alive for hundreds of years, whereas whoever comes in contact with her dies. Hence, it is only natural that every companion that she has had in the past has left her one way or the other. But Lawrence promises not to leave her side till she reaches her final destination.
Verdict
Today’s episode was very emotionally involved as we see the vulnerable side of both Holo and Lawrence. To some extent, these two are very alike, and their compatibility shows through their close proximity. But we also got a nasty twist towards the end. Hopefully, everything will be fine for our protagonists.
