Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf Episode 23 Recap

Things look grim for Holo and Lawrence as the village starts to turn on them, holding them responsible for a streak of bad luck. A shoemaker from Enberch recently died after consuming wheat sourced from this village, sparking accusations. The villagers are eager to point fingers, and the most obvious suspect seems to be Lawrence, who arrived with a supply of wheat. Rumours spread that he may have contaminated it with something harmful.
However, Lawrence is not about to accept blame without cause. He has another option: reaching out to his trading guild for protection. But if the guild steps in to shield Lawrence, someone else will have to take the fall. The villagers would likely target Evan, a young man they’ve long disliked. Pinning the crime on him would be easy, given their longstanding resentment.
Elsa, who has shown support for Evan and might have deeper feelings for him, could also face consequences. Her loyalty to Evan could lead to harsher judgment from the community. On the other hand, if the villagers choose to shoulder the blame themselves, they face serious repercussions. They might be forced to compensate for the wheat sent to Enberch, and there’s a risk that Enberch will force them into a disadvantageous agreement in the future.
After weighing their options, Lawrence and Holo realize there’s only one solution to escape this dire situation: they must leave the village, even if it means accepting responsibility. But they also plan to help Evan and Elsa as well.
Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf Episode 24 Review and Recap

Today’s episode starts with the part when Lawrence, Holo, Evan and Elsa decide to leave the village and save themselves, fearing they will be framed for something they have not done. They use the backdoor of the church to escape, only to find the route leading to the cave of the pagan god of Tereyo. This should be considered a great idea because the villagers would never suspect the Church’s secret door leads to the place of the god they follow.
The group runs towards the stream, and when they discover running away barefoot is not a feasible option, Holo comes to the rescue. She transforms into her glorious wolf form but also manages to threaten the others before utilising her as a ride. But, you can see how softened Holo is towards Evan and Elsa when she allows them to rest on her body like they were her children.

However, their short plan faces another huge blow when they see a large number of soldiers from Enberch ride towards Tereo. Lawrence deduces the Church of Enberch now has a very good opportunity to label Tereo as a village of heretics who believe in Pagan gods. This way, they can impose unlawful conditions on the village and take it under their control. After seeing the grave situation, now comes a big question for Elsa. Should she run back home to save it or go somewhere far with her lover, who also dislikes the village?
The music in this episode was wonderful, and it complimented the environment perfectly. I loved the animation as well because it has become much better over time.

Verdict
I loved today’s episode because I could see the clear character growth of both Lawrence and Holo. Lawrence has become a lot calmer, and it seems like nothing fazes or agitates him anymore. Holo has also become more understanding of humans.
