Shantaram Episode 11 Review: The City Starts to Crumble

Shantaram Episode 11 finds Lin trapped between a lethal war for Sagarwada, and officer Nightangle’s closing hunch. The episodes raise the stakes for the series and set all the characters loose. For the unversed, the drama series is created by Eric Warren Singer and Steve Lightfoot and is based on the book by Gregory David Roberts. Moreover, Ian B MacDonald serves as the director for this instalment.

The complete cast of the series includes Charlie Hunnam as Lindsay Ford, Alexander Siddig as Abdel Khader Khan, Shubham Saraf as Prabhu, Luke Pasqualino as Maurizio, Elektra Kilbey as Lisa Carter, Alyy Khan as Qasim Ali, Matthew Joseph as Ravi, Sujaya Dasgupta as Kavita, Antonia Desplat as Karla, and Fayssal Bazzi as Abdullah Taheri. Furthermore, the latest episode is titled Baquet of Consequences.

-Shantaram Episode 11 Review Does Not Contain Spoilers-

The episode starts with a disappointed Lin (in preparation for leaving everything behind) having a short yet meaningful conversation with Prabhu. During the conversation, he puts certain things in perspective and concludes that he was thoroughly used as Khader Bhai’s manipulated pawn. Moreover, the philosophical convict decides that the only solution to get rid of everything is to leave and pack the bag for the last time.

Meanwhile, Karla’s decision to save Lin’s past leads to a consequential gang war between Khader and Walid. And puts everyone’s life in danger, including Lisa and Maurizio. However, the enigmatic Karla still backs her love for Lin over his mentor’s seasoned advice and remains completely honest with Lin (at least for one last time).

Furthermore, almost all the characters in the show find their groove and start to become part of the tumult. Which makes Officer Nightingale, next in line for haunting Lin with his undue investigation. In this episode, instead of flipping random pages from the book, he learns the desi way of solving crimes and tracks down the fugitive.

What happens next, is simply the reaction to Lin’s unintended steps in the series. Till now, the kind-hearted alleged doctor of Sagarwada has tried all his might, to evade the troubles of his past. But as it turns out, the real answer lies in his confrontation, not in his fear (Episode 11 deserves some philosophy). At last, the action in the series has started, and Lin remains the centre point of it all.

So far, the series has made all the efforts to stick with the subject matter, and avoid any improvised additions. Moreover, this has definitely worked in the favour of Lin’s character arc (credit also goes to Charlie Hunnam’s absorbing performance) but not in the show’s pace. Even though I am in the favour of slow revelations, sometimes they can be a little too much.

Apart from Charlie Hunnam, Shubham Saraf’s honest portrayal of Prabhu is a complete treat to watch. He has successfully infused empathy in the role of Sagarwada’s handy guy and somehow made me care about the fate of Prabhu, more than the protagonist.

I am willing to ignore all the flaws in the series if the makers are able to curate a perfect finale. Moreover, the least they can do is maintain a tight grip on the characters and induce the thriller element, much like this episode.
