See You in My 19th Life Episode 1 Recap

The first episode of the series starts with Ban Ji-eum appearing in a flowy blue dress overlooking the sea. She explains about her special ability to remember her past lives and how she has been born multiple times throughout centuries. Currently, she was living her 19th life and was born in a modest yet dysfunctional family. Her father often abused her mother relentlessly when he needed money to spend it on alcohol.

Suddenly, the memories of her 18th life came to her one night. She remembered how she died and the boy that was inside the car during the accident. The boy’s name was Moon Seo-ha, the son of a chaebol with whom she had a close friendship. After remembering that he survived the impact, she became determined to find him again and rekindle their relationship. However, it was not an easy task to do so.

Ji-eum started to join in various competitions and instantly became a nationwide sensation for her talent and skills. People started referring to her as a prodigy child. With the help of these variety shows, she earned and saved money so she could travel and meet Seo-ha. But her family took advantage of her at every point, and it became impossible for her to achieve her objective.

One fine day she escaped her house and travelled across town to meet with a lady who owned a small restaurant. She introduced herself as the woman’s uncle, which was her 17th reincarnation form. Ji-eum begged her for some money and requested to stay with her. The lady got convinced instantly and agreed to raise her. After much travelling, Ji-eun finally saw Seo-haa for some time, but he moved to Germany after a few days.

Since Ji-eum did not have enough capital to travel to Germany, she started to study hard and grab a high-paying job. While working, she found out that Seo-ha returned to South Korea, and she decided to meet him. She quickly arrived at the hotel owned by his family and had a brief encounter with him. Later, Seo-ha informed his father that he will be restoring his late mother’s hotel, which turned into an argument.

Seo-ha required new staff and employees, and he came across Ji-eum’s resume. Impressed by her achievements at such a young age, he called her in for an interview. However, during the interview, the conversation initially remained formal, but Ji-eum abruptly asked him to date her and left him speechless. The episode ended on that note.

The highly anticipated first episode of the series successfully lived up to the expectations. Following a story based on a supernatural instance can prove to be a disaster when executed poorly; however, that is far from the case for this drama. The premise was explained in a subtle and entertaining way which piqued the audience’s interest. It consisted of every element, from humorous scenes to emotional ones, to make it a rather satisfactory watch.

Another aspect of the series is the talented actors that delivered amazing performances. Shin Hye-sun undoubtedly stood out the most among others with her effortless acting skills and smooth dialogue delivery.
