Satria Dewa Gatotkaca Review: Hindu Mythology Comes Live in the 21st Century

Satria Dewa Gatotkaca takes you through an adventure that brings Hindu mythology to the present that shows the continued rivalry between the Pandavas and Kauravas through their descendants. The film becomes an interesting concept for the viewers, by does it stand up to our expectations?

Directed by Hanung Bramantyo, the film stars Rizky Nazar, Yasmin Napper, Omar Daniel, Ali Fikry, Edward Akbar, Sigi Wimala, Yatie Surachman, Yayan Ruhian, and Cecep Arif Rahman, alongside other cast members.

Netflix’s synopsis of the film reads:

Legends collide as young Yuda wrestles with his newfound godlike powers, defending his world in an endless battle against ancient and powerful evils.

Moving on from Norse and Greek mythology, we are now witnessing filmmakers moving onto bringing Hindu mythology into the present times with their works. It is especially in this year of 2022, that we are witnessing some wonderful films that are either bringing out some powerful astras or warriors of a significant battle that we cannot avoid watching.

Satria Dewa Gatotkaca is one such film and with the name of a legendary warrior from the epic Mahabharata, we can see that this movie is bringing us the war between the Pandavas and Kauravas. And I am not going to lie, the concept does have a lot of potentials to make it big in the industry.

This Indonesian film has got a capturing idea, however, I have to say that it does not bring the contentment that we would have hoped for. It is an enjoyable film, but there are a few elements that can be a disappointment while watching the film and some points that have the potential of evoking anger in some people.

On the other hand, I have to say that I have indeed loved the idea that the creators have brought with this film. And while it may look like a superhero film, it is definitely not going down that line and is sticking to the action part. This brings me to the fight scenes that will give you some good martial arts sequences for those who enjoy good fights.

Overall, this is just the first instalment of the Satria Dewa films and hopefully, the creators see the improvements that they can make in the second film. As they cover the legendary warriors of the battle, I do hope that the second film won’t repeat the mistakes of this first film.

Summing Up: Satria Dewa Gatotkaca

The film has a lot of improvements to make but it is a fun watch for mythology lovers who would like to see the legendary warriors come to the present. And while the costume that makes an appearance towards the ending may point towards the superhero route, it is not and I certainly hope it doesn’t go that way.

You will find some funny scenes in the film, however, the ads that also exist will take away that fun part and make you annoyed. So be patient or just skip forward, because it is not hard to recognise those ads.

Altogether, a fun watch that makes us hopeful for the sequel that should cover up the mistakes made in this film.
