If you are new to Ronny, he is a Malaysian comedian and actor known for The Daily Show on Comedy Central and the star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng: International Student.
He’s also starred in Crazy Rich Asians and Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, quite the star-studded affair to expect from him. Ronny Chieng: Speakeasy, in his standup comedy special with an approximate runtime of an hour, was funny and very quick-witted (which is my favourite type of comedy). The topics he brought up were refreshing.

Ronny Chieng: Speakeasy Has an Exuberant Look With the Palatial Setting
Chieng’s delivery is smooth and slick as he walks around the stage on a circular red carpet. He has a comedic style that’s laid back but not lazy. In the beginning, he seems nervous or maybe even a little stressed. It could just be that this is not his usual environment. The crowd seems more comfortable than he does. After the first few minutes, Chieng settles into his element and tells stories about travelling worldwide and seeing different cultures.

The special seems very well thought out with the lighting, background and music. The music score sounds like it belongs in a movie, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they use it in an action movie or something similar. It sets the tone for what Chieng has to say, and it also gives him a cool entrance when he comes out of nowhere onto the stage.
These stories are pretty funny, and the jokes are on point. But even though the stage is set for Chieng to be funny and there are thrills in this space, it feels like something is missing. It wasn’t just one-liners the whole time, but it wasn’t a story with a punchline at the end either. His comedy stretches from appreciation and love for nerds to women taking the pill, many topics covered that I haven’t heard/seen before, so this was interesting and felt refreshing.
Ranging From Diversity to Nerds, Ronny Chieng: Speakeasy Was a Roller-Coaster Ride
His unique style talks about topics I haven’t seen in other standup comedians before. As a fellow Asian, he broke down today’s stereotypical barrier in comedy. His jokes are clever and witty, and he has timely punchlines. He doesn’t use simple tricks, and his humour is not offensive.
Ronny Chieng, a comedian, known for his work on The Daily Show, brings his observations and insights to the stage in this standup special. Chieng talks about the unique challenges of being an immigrant, shares his thoughts on the American Dream, and explains why diversity is never wrong.

Ronny Chieng: Speakeasy Had an Upbeat Tune to Its Name
I don’t know what it is about standup comedy, but I find something about it exciting. The ability to communicate with an audience, hold their attention and make them laugh is a skill that I admire. Ronny Chieng put focus on a lot of topics with an interesting take.

I think Ronny Chieng’s standup is a great example of positive discrimination. He uses his own experience as an Asian to create many jokes in his show, and he does this without being offensive to anyone. This was, in general, a very lighthearted show, and I feel like he could get away with that because he’s not white.
