In this chilling true crime documentary series, we see several women with dreams in their eyes coming to the chilling realisation that the man they fell in love with is a conman with a long rap sheet. The short runtime is packed with unthinkable crimes that, although never get physical, are a horrible showcase of how dangerous the world can be.

Dating apps have become the bane and the boon of our existence. With time short and little opportunity to connect with people to form meaningful relationships, we are all left to swipe on our screens, hoping for our spouse to pop up somehow. However, what happens when you meet the most charming person who happens to be a total psychopath?

Romcon brings that fear to us in a pocket-sized watch. With only 2 short episodes, we are made to feel a whirlwind of feelings as the fairytale turns dark and the nightmares come up. The best part about the series is the brave women who don’t stop at anything to bring the truth to light and help other women in turn. The series is a shocking showcase of gaslighting and lovebombing, and will leave you with chills. You appreciate Heather for her continuous efforts to see justice served, as well as anyone else who bears their souls and private information to help this documentary become impactful.

It’s these testimonies that truly keep you on edge and watching. Jason Porter has refused to be a part of the documentary, like all cowards who lie and steal from those who love them, so we are left to find reason and justifications from the victims and understand the why behind it all. I guess there really is no correct answer that takes the pain away from a situation such as this.

The series highlights the shame and the heartbreak that victims of romance scams face as well. As we all move to a more digital, impersonal world, these stories become even more chilling, highlighting why online safety and understanding red flags are so important. Scams have become such an everyday part of our lives that the devastation of realising that the person you love only saw you as a meal ticket is one a lot of viewers will find hard to digest.

I enjoyed watching Romcon mainly because it’s to the point, no nonsense and intense. You get the facts and the emotions, but without any drama. It’s a devastating and chilling series that doesn’t overdo or overstay. If you’re interested to learn about romance scams and their devastating consequences, this one’s a must-watch.
