Queen Mantis Episode 5 Recap
The episode opens with Jung-ho having a conversation with Yi-shin in the past, at the time when she was caught. She discusses why she did what she did and mentions how she saw him going around in the neighbourhood where she killed her first victim. We then see her asking Jung-ho to take care of young Su-yeol and to make him a police officer.
In the present, Yi-shin chats with Jung-yeon while Jung-ho and Su-yeol try to figure out where she could’ve gone. He suddenly realises that she could have paid a visit to his wife, and she runs home to confront her. It’s an awkward situation for everyone involved as Jung-yeon only wants to know her mother-in-law without knowing the entire truth, and Su-yeol isn’t able to divulge anything for fear that his wife might leave him. In the end, Su-yeol arrests Yi-shin once again, leaving Jung-ho thankful.

Back at the prison, Su-yeol asks Yi-shin whether she killed Gu-wan, and she is quite relaxed with this reality, but asks him whether he is really sorry to see Gu-wan dead. It’s a confusing few minutes, and Su-yeol eventually comes out empty-handed. The interaction leaves Su-yeol questioning himself and whether he is like his mother, and Jung-ho comforts him, telling him that he is nothing like her.
Elsewhere, the police let Min-jae go, and, with Su-yeol getting the responsibility of taking him home, the two have an uncomfortable conversation, ending in him advising Su-yeol to take care of Yi-shin. The two have a fight after Min-jae constantly asks him to accept Yi-shin, but Su-yeol strongly asks him to stop trying.
Either way, the team is back to square one with the investigation, while Min-jae continues to mingle with Jung-yeon. Su-yeol eventually steals records from Yi-shin’s psychologist while struggling with the thought of deceiving everyone around him. Going through all of the evidence that he has gathered, Su-yeol eventually has a cell phone delivered to him.

He shares the content with everyone, which consists of gruesome videos of the present murders. He eventually gets a phone call, which asks him to hand the phone over to Yi-shin. Of course, the others don’t understand what is happening, and a frustrated Na-hee asks the men to explain themselves. Not being able to keep this secret anymore, Su-yeol finally divulges the truth to the team. Of course, no one is happy with this, but Jung-ho tries to divert everyone’s attention.
Na-hee takes their words at face value and tells Su-yeol about the dating app, hoping to catch the perpetrator or the next victim using the app. Eventually, the entire team meets Yi-shin to interrogate her and take the phone call as well. It’s a very uncomfortable phone conversation where they both talk about murdering more people! In the end, the team has a hunch about the next victim and rushes to stop another person from dying.

Elsewhere, Min-jae talks to Joy and baits them to meet him while the police suddenly lose sight of Kim Seo-joon. When they take the bait, Min-jae calls Su-yeol, but he’s far too occupied to pick up. As it turns out, Joy was always out to get Min-jae and appears out of the blue to attack him. When Su-yeol finds him, he is badly beaten and strung up with wires, leaving Su-yeol to be absolutely devastated at another heartbreaking loss.
Queen Mantis Episode 5 Review

Queen Mantis has been doing a fantastic job of adding twists and turns that are not only terrifying but hold on to the tension till the end. I have absolutely no idea who could be the perpetrator, and poor Min-jae had to suffer because we are all confused, but I love the direction the series is taking. Hopefully, it gives us something deliciously twisted!
