Ponniyin Selvan 1 is the latest epic period drama that has been released in theatres on 30th September, after much anticipation. The film is directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote it with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. Produced by Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.
It is the first of two cinematic parts, which is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. The film stars an ensemble cast of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman and R. Parthiban. The music is composed by A R Rahman, with cinematography handled by Ravi Varman.
The plot of the film is about the power struggle during the Chola rule between ADs 900 and 950. The three main points of the plot are the ruler Sundara Chola and his sons Adithya Karikalan and Arulmozhivarman. The conspiracies and the struggle for power between the main characters and those around them form the basis of this story. It essentially tells the story of the early life of Arulmozhivarman, who would become the Chola emperor Rajaraja I (947–1014).

The film is said to be Mani Ratnam’s dream project which he tried to make several times until 2019 when he finally got to take his dream off. And with him is returning, the musical genius A.R. Rahman. The masterful duo have collaborated once again for this film after giving us various masterpieces in their previous work together.
And their hard work isn’t going unnoticed as the early reactions and reviews of the film are highly praising the director for doing the right justice to the literature and bringing it on the screen aptly. Along with it, you can not leave out the beautiful music scores that add up to the visuals and make it a wholesome experience.
While the huge turnout for the premiere is evident enough, people are even lining up for a second show back-to-back. The viewers are expressing their awe for the actor Vikram who plays the role of Aditha Karikalan, the crown prince and the commander of Northern troops in Sundara Chola’s Reign and his love interest, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. As they proved their acting prowess, bringing the character to life and making the audience feel every emotion with them.
