Persuasion (2022) Ending Explained: Who Does Anne End Up With- Captain Wentworth or Mr Elliot?

The mixed reviews on Persuasion has everyone on the fence. The latest book to screen adaptation by Netflix based on Jane Austen’s last novel of the same name takes some liberal turns in translating the work for this generation. Nonetheless, the film does have its own elements of fun, laughter and wittiness.

Directed by Carrie Cracknell from a screenplay by Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow and produced by MRC, the movie stars Dakota Johnson as our protagonist Anne Elliot, along with Cosmo Jarvis as Captain Frederick Wentworth, Henry Golding as Mr. William Elliot, Richard E. Grant as Sir Walter Elliot, Nikki Amuka-Bird as Lady Russell, Izuka Hoyle as Henrietta Musgrove, Mia McKenna-Bruce as Mary Elliot, Nia Towle as Louisa Musgrove and others.

Persuasion revolves around the story of Anne, who when young was persuaded to give up her love Frederick Wentworth due to his humble origins. Eight years later, Anne and, now Captain Wentworth cross paths, unknowingly and, the romance of the past makes its way to rekindle the present. But, the question still remains, will it be enough for Anne to not be persuaded again? With some new charming new characters around, Anne finds herself in an ultimate pickle disarmed by both Captain Wentworth and William Elliot. So, who does she pick at the end?

Persuasion Ending Explained: Who Does Anne Elliot End Up With?

Towards the end of Persuasion, Anne finds herself quiet in the romantic mess she wasn’t hoping for. Her feelings for Wentworth won’t go away but, has been informed that Wentworth is engaged to Louisa. She has also taken a liking for William Elliot, who soon enough ends up offering her a marriage proposal to think on. With so much on her mind, Anne just wants some time to herself reading and drinking.

But, where’s the peace in Elliot’s household. Anne’s sister Mary makes her appearance along with her husband only to convince Anne to visit the reunion of their entire Lyme party at the nearby inn. This particular event would also serve as Captain Wentworth’s farewell party before he heads indefinitely for the sea. Initially, Anne is reluctant to go but, finally agrees.

At the send-off party, Anne can hardly look at Wentworth due to the pain of him going away and vice versa. She cracks a conversation with another captain on the crew, who had previously been kind to her. That is when she gets to know that Louisa indeed is engaged, not to Wentworth but, to Captain Benedick. Before Anne is able to talk to Wentworth, he is gone but, leaves behind a letter for Anne.

The heart-piercing letter is soon enough read by Anne and in it, he has confessed his feelings for Anne and, how he never stopped loving her in the first place. Anne runs out of the inn, in expectation to catch Wentworth. In passing, she witnesses Mrs. Clay in Mr. William Wentworth’s arms, both intimate and kissing. Anne seems least bothered by Mr. Elliot’s betrayal and wishes him happiness as she continues to chase Wentworth. She finds him on the way and the two share a kiss.

The film ends with the shot of Mr. Elliot marrying Mrs. Clay. Anne and Wentworth are shown at the cliff by the sea, which we also see at the start, together. They are married as Anne flaunts a ring on her finger. Wentworth is seen teaching our witty Anne navigation at the sea and, soon enough they both rest in each others’ arms, probably for eternity.
