Overlord Season 4 Episode 4 Review- An Action Plan

Overlord is a thinking man’s show. Not much happens here that is just for the sake of entertainment without keeping an eye open for the greater plot importance. Every conversation between characters is important and provides a greater context of what happened in the past or what is going to happen in the future. It is extremely dense with character development and tiny details that get resolved later, leading to an almost can’t-miss nature of every episode. However, the same thing can also sometimes be interpreted as awkward pacing.

This was a great episode of the show for those who like its political and action-filled aspects more than the other ones. It saw Ainz move further along in his efforts to make a name for his kingdom and establish himself as the biggest force of nature in that world. The last episode focused more on the empire’s side of the issue and their efforts to align themselves with a new holy entity that might just be the one we have been looking for since the first season’s conclusion. The show has gotten a little distracted from the point since, but that has been on the backs of everyone’s minds.

Ainz has been a confounding presence throughout the season (some might say the entire show) for a singular reason- his intellect hasn’t been defined very well. He is usually two to three steps ahead of every NPC in the game and shows a frightening understanding of the human psyche and how to manipulate it. On the other end of the spectrum, whenever governing his kingdom is concerned, he doesn’t even know the basics, let alone the grandiose plans of world domination. He bends too easily to his underlings’ whims, and while that makes for entertaining television, it might lead to trouble down the river.

However, one thing he can’t be touched on is his strength, which Overlord Season 4 Episode 4 was a great example of. His battle against the empire’s champion, which we saw start in the last episode, was a fantastic watch even if its result was never in doubt. We also learnt about his motivations to do that in the first place and how he didn’t have any animosity toward the empire at that particular moment, making the events of the last episode just that wild. It was a decent enough development and was animated well, making it very fun to watch. The war troll was a great character and an even better opponent for Momonga.

The next few episodes are going to be critical for the empire if they want to survive against Ainz and his extraordinary powers. An interesting wrench has been thrown in the middle with the holy kingdom, but unless we finally get to meet one of the other members of Ainz Ooal Gown that Momonga seems to want to find, this battle isn’t going to be any less one-sided than the previous ones. One almost wonders if it’s the strength of the world item that Ainz seeks from the user or the user themselves for the faintest chance of them being one of his former friends?
Verdict
Overlord Season 4 Episode 4 was a very fun outing that featured some great action and fine character development, alongside the show’s usually great political and psychological warfare. Is the season picking up the pace?
