Overlord Season 4 Episode 1 Review- Governing Troubles

What is often forgotten about Overlord as a story is that it is ultimately a tale of extreme loneliness and nostalgia. It began when Momonga was the only one left still playing the game when his guild members all left, and his desire to contact just one of them has filled most of what has happened in the previous seasons, even if it wasn’t explicitly put that way. He even renamed himself to his guild’s name so that his guildmates would hear of his accomplishments and find him that way if any of them were there.

The kingdom that formed towards the end of the last season was a testament to just that, his efforts to try to fit in a world where he didn’t belong and to a hope to find his friends somehow. This episode exacerbated this feeling of loneliness quite a lot with a sweeping view of the empty kingdom and adventurer’s guild as Momon took in everything that he received after meticulous plotting and countless deaths. If this doesn’t seem worth it so far, Momon will make it worth it, one way or another.

There has been a strange trend concerning shows with governing a kingdom plot-point in the past few years. Shows like Log Horizon and Realist hero have started to make people realise that politics is fun to watch, even during its menial parts. The minutia behind managing hundreds of thousands of people and keeping a kingdom safe from everyone who might have their eyes on it is interesting anyway you look at it. The first half of the latest season of Overlord was focused on doing its best in this department, and it did a great job with it.

Momon getting flustered in front of all of his admirers hasn’t changed a bit so far, and so hasn’t his incompetency with everything except being astonishingly powerful. He is not a great leader to a country yet, but that’s what all of his followers are for. Albedo was great in this episode despite not doing anything different from how she was previously written. Mare and Aura were also pretty fun to watch, and the new season should focus more on them as characters. There is a pattern of each season starting with an arc on one of Momon’s followers, and it seems to be their turn now.

The animation that Madhouse brings to the table gets better each and every season, and this one is no exception. Overlord looks crisper and cleaner than it has ever looked, including much more expressive and detailed facial expressions. A first episode is usually not the best way to judge any of these series, but this one has an established legacy that precedes it. We didn’t hear much from the music department in this episode, which is a shame. That will probably not be an issue for long, though.
Overview
Overlord Season 4 Episode 1 was a fantastic start to the latest adventure of Momon and his followers. The episode was just the right amount of funny and invoked a pleasant nostalgia for its fans who have supported it so far.
