– Our Beloved Summer episode 6 recap contains major spoilers –
We start off with Ung asking Yeon-su to stay over and Yeon-su saying that that’s why they broke up. We then go back to when she was in school and could not take part in all of her friends’ activities since she was poor. She never had any ill feelings about it, but it did affect her relationship with people around her – it taught her to be self-centred. However, that changed when she met Ung. He helped her to escape her reality.
We see the two of them going through the ups and downs of school and college together where he helped her get away from reality. He also helped her to dream, to think that she could do something other than the usual 9-to-5 job. Where she can get more success than the ordinary. However, just as she dared to dream, she was met with bad luck over and over again. While her reality was always knocking on the door, Ung was living the life that he wanted – it was a life that he created as he saw fit.
Thus, the reason why Yeon-su broke up with Ung was that she was afraid that Ung would eventually find out her inferiority complex – because their lives were too different. Such a great opening for Our Beloved Summer episode 6.
Anyway, the morning after Yeon-su comes to his place, Ung wakes up in the morning without any recollection of what happened the night before. He sees the yellow flask, but he is unable to understand how he slept so soundly.
At Soen Shop, Yeon-su is getting ready to tackle the big day while Ji-ung is taking Ung’s interview in Our Beloved Summer episode 6. Eun-ho drives Ung to the store and he goes up to his room to find Yeon-su sleeping on the couch. As he watches her sleeping, he thinks that he finally appreciates Yeon-su for who she really is. After she wakes up, she wonders what he will say about last night. Just then, he asks her whether she came over last night.
Yeon-su is thankful that he doesn’t remember and when he starts to ask her more about it when she leaves. The conversation remains unfinished and Ung seems unhappy. At the live showing area, Yeon-su is taken aback seeing the video of Ung drawing – it’s a side that she has never seen before. Meanwhile, Ung is still unable to recall why he slept so well last night. Although Eun-ho tells him that it’s not a big deal, Ung is unable to forget.
Anyway, the live drawing starts in Our Beloved Summer episode 6 and the two artists draw in different rooms. While Ung draws by hand, Nu-a is drawing on a drawing tablet. The audience looks on mesmerised, including Yeon-su. However, Ji-ung whisks her away to take an interview where he talks excitedly about Ung. When she comes back, she runs into Ung’s parents who are going home. His mother asks her to visit them since neither of them has taken the breakup well.
Charged from that encounter, Yeon-su locks herself in a room and remembers about last night. Unwell, Ung fell on Yeon-su and she took him inside. On the couch, he again falls unconscious (or asleep?) with Yeon-su sitting right there. After she comes down to escort Ung to the next session, NJ gives congratulates him in front of everyone which pushes the media into a frenzy. However, Ung looks at Yeon-su longingly, while Ji-ung looks at Yeon-su.
After the event, Yeon-su sits down alone, exhausted, while Ung greets NJ who has told the press that they are just friends who are rooting for each other. At Sol-yi’s bar, Yeon-su tells her friend that she is jealous of Ung and that she feels pathetic for herself. That although Ung has gone through many changes in his life, she has remained stagnant. Sol-yi tries to uplift her spirits saying that she has worked very hard to be where she is today and has achieved everything thanks to her hard work. However, sitting at the bar alone, Yeon-su seems to think otherwise in Our Beloved Summer episode 6.
That night, Sol-yi calls Ji-ung to move a passed out Yeon-su. While they are talking, Ji-ung asks her whether she still likes Ung. She, of course, tells him that she doesn’t. Coming back home, she sees Ung standing outside her house. As they bump into each other, thanks to a very drunk Yeon-su, she thinks back to what happened last night at Ung’s place.
As she tries to get inside her house, Ung asks her whether she is going to pretend that nothing happened last night. This takes her by surprise since she has been under the impression that he doesn’t remember. As he calls her, she tearfully looks back at him in Our Beloved Summer episode 6. He asks her whether it is right for them to live like this – their love, nor their breakup, was lukewarm. So why should they just talk about frivolous things and not talk about the tougher things?
Yeon-su finally admits to herself that the reason why they broke up was because of her pride.
In the epilogue, we go back to Yeon-su and Ung in their dorm rooms. After Yeon-su leaves, Ung searches for jobs for art majors. 4 months after the breakup, he wonders what to do. Crying, he starts to draw – essentially the story of when he started to draw.
Final Thoughts: Our Beloved Summer episode 6
Episode 6 is brutal as it is heartbreaking. Essentially given as Yeon-su’s backstory, we get to know the thoughts behind her tough exterior. Continuously hurt for a long time and taking responsibility for things she should have had to, it is understandable why she has some skewered perceptions. Leaving Ung was a mistake that I am sure she too understands and regrets and things might just look better for them both if she learns to look past what has happened.
Plus, Ji-ung and Ung’s relationships with Yeon-su, too, is heartbreaking. While Ung’s is understandable, Ji-ung’s one-sided love brings about nothing but pity.
