Ah, Ung thinks back on his life as he wonders how the critics and Nu-a could’ve summed up his life in one sentence. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be abandoned by their father in the middle of the city all of a sudden and then start living with wonderful people and feel like it’s a borrowed life. It’s heartbreaking, real and very relatable.

In the present, in Our Beloved Summer episode 16, Ung asks Yeon-su to go with him to the architecture school in Paris. Although she seems a bit unsure, she promises to think about it since it’s the first thing he has shown genuine interest towards. Shockingly, Do-yul asks her to join his Paris team the next day. The opportunity comes at a very convenient time, but of course, Yeon-su is a bit confused at how easily it comes around.

Meanwhile, Ung is more serious than ever about his future… He fires Eun-ho, who cannot get over the suddenness of the decision either and cries at the exorbitant severance pay. When NJ comes along to get her paintings, she gives him a bit of information that makes him think – Yeon-su must really love him to put his life before her own. Both have some thinking to do, now that Yeon-su’s grandmother is also home.

Yeon-su asks Ung whether he wants to meet at Sol-i’s in the evening and then she tells her boss her decision which he agrees to… something that we are yet to know. Meanwhile, Ung and his mother have a discussion about how she knew that he knew about their son. However, she tells him that it doesn’t change anything between them or how they perceive him – he has always been their son and will continue to be so.

At Sol-i’s, Ung and Yeon-su discuss what her decision is regarding going to Paris. As she comes back home, she tells her sleeping grandmother that although she asked her to follow her dreams, Yeon-su has been doing that all along, she has never been alone and has always been surrounded by people who love her. She is already living her life the way she wants to.

Flashback to Sol-i’s , Yeon-su tells Ung that she’s not going since for the first time she is enjoying her life. She wants to keep exploring the life that she has now because it’s probably what she has wanted all along. Ung, in reply, tells her he was wondering how long it will take him to deserve her. Since he hasn’t really done much in his life, he wants to explore that area and make something of himself. Yeon-su tells him to go – they will be fine.

Meanwhile, after getting some pep talk from Dong-il, Ji-ung finally decides to visit his mother in the hospital, if only to talk about the distance between them. She tells him that she knows that she’s been selfish but she wants him to visit her from time to time, even if it’s a selfish ask. She gives some really bad excuse for abandoning her child that just boils my blood. Ji-ung tells her that he can’t forgive her and her going through stuff did not discount her leaving him. However, he asks her to fight to stay alive so that if one day he ever decides to forgive her, they can start anew.

As Ung gets ready to leave, he spends every day with Yeon-su happy and satisfied. His father was a little angry at him leaving, but I guess that’s understandable. On the day of his departure, as his father is waiting, he goes to meet his birth father one more time, if only to sever their ties once and for all.

As Ung goes to Paris, his relationship with Yeon-su is as good as before. Yeon-su, too, has found her footing in her life and seems to be enjoying it quite a bit. Ah, this sequence is so cute. Yeon-su missing Ung, him surprising her with a visit, him professing his love for her for the first time – ah, it’s all so cute.

At Ung’s parents’ book donation event, everyone seems to be doing better. Ung and Yeon-su are still together, Ji-ung is at a better place and Eun-ho and Sol-i are dating. While keeping books and talking about their childhood crush for each other, Ung asks Yeon-su to marry him.

In the epilogue, Ji-ung asks a now-married Yeon-su and Ung that they have to film another documentary again since their last one is now trending. Both of them refuse vehemently, but of course, end up joining the shoot again.

Final Thoughts: Our Beloved Summer episode 16

The Our Beloved Summer finale couldn’t have ended in a better way. I am not crying, you are. I don’t think it could’ve ended in a better way. I am glad that Yeon-su didn’t give up her life to go with Ung. It reminded me of Alexis and Ted in Schitt’s Creek. I am glad that they grew up enough to live apart yet still be in each other’s lives. And I am glad that Ji-ung has found some sort of peace in his life. It’s the perfect ending to a rather emotional rollercoaster of a show.

Now excuse me while I sit down and sob.
