Oshi No Ko Episode 9 Review- B Komachi

Mem-cho director Oshi No Ko Episode 9

This was the most normal of all the episodes we have seen air so far. There was next to no drama or darkness in this one, and it just featured a straightforward story of MEM-cho joining B-Komachi and being accepted by Ruby and Kana. Don’t get me wrong; there is nothing wrong with being straightforward every once in a while. It is just that this show didn’t build its fanbase and reputation by playing it straight like everyone else. We are here for the drama and the darkness behind the scenes, not some teenagers trying to build an actual idol group.

After showing us the despair that lies within trying to become a successful idol and make it in the entertainment industry, it is weird that we are getting episodes such as this, where some characters that we would rather not see meet the same fate as Ai are trying their best to head towards the same path. That makes the tone of the show and the happenings in an episode contrast against each other, and it is hard to see how much of that is intentional.

We didn’t even get the answers we sought with Aqua and the producer. The producer made some dismissive comments about, essentially, “you scratch my back, and I scratch yours”. If you remember, this was exactly what he said about Aqua doing his show in the first place, so we are essentially back where we started. We did get a little information, but nothing to get excited about. After seeing a whole arc of doing that show, the result of it fell flat. I’m sure this is all leading up to something based on the producer’s information, but for the here and now, This wasn’t the show at its best.

The same can be said about MEM-cho, Ruby, and Kana officially being a trio and starting to practice for their debut. One aspect of it that hasn’t been talked about yet is B-Komachi might be a big deal in the show’s canon, and a lot of people might even give attention to the new group just because of the old one, but we, the audience watching at home, do not hold that level of respect for the group. We don’t even know what they sounded like except for 10-second-long clips of a couple of songs. We just knew Ai, and despite her fame and legend, we know how flawed of a human being she was.

Thus, when we see These guys try so hard in Oshi no Ko Episode 9 to carry on the legacy of Ai, one wonders if they should just have let it die instead. The show’s strength lies in its uncovering of the dark facts of the entertainment and idol industry, not revelling in it. This was the show’s weakest episode so far because we saw all of its weaknesses without going into any of its strengths. Let’s chalk this one up to bad pacing, shall we?

Verdict

Oshi No Ko Episode 9 was the weakest in the series so far and put up more questions than answers about the current direction of the show. Is the anime running out of steam already?
