Oshi No Ko Episode 5 Review: Season Of Love

A new plan forms in the mind of Aqua as Oshi No Ko Episode 5 sees Kana join the fray even more than she already had. Let’s see if she agrees to be a part of strawberry productions in this review!

Oshi No Ko Episode 5 Overview

Oshi No Ko Episode 5 Title

Oshi No Ko, or My Star, is a drama and supernatural anime based on a manga written by Aka Akasaka, who also wrote Kaguya-sama Love Is War and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. The anime adaptation is being directed by Daisuke Hiramaki, who has directed shows like Selection Project and Koisuru Asteroid in the past, alongside being a part of huge productions such as Bunny Girl Senpai and Naruto.

The series is being brought into the medium of anime by studio Doga Kobo, a relatively new studio which has been behind shows like Himotou Umaru-chan and Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie. This episode is also referred to as My Star Episode 5. Click here to read the review of the previous episode!

Oshi No Ko Episode 5 Review- Reality Dating Show

Aqua actress Oshi No Ko Episode 5

Episode 1 of this show featured the murder of a pop idol in front of her children as she talked to them while they sobbed. Episode 5 of this episode featured two wannabe idols doing a workout/dance routine with the hunkiest dude you’ve ever seen wearing a bird mask. That is not even the weirdest part of all of this. The weirdest part would be these two scenes existing in a singular season of this show, and both of their existence making perfect sense within the show’s continuity. This is a weird show, but the weirdness is what makes it so charming in the first place.

This was, I felt, a setup episode that is going to lead to big things in the future. Not much happened here that is very important on its own, but when things finally pop off, we will all be glad that this episode existed to bridge the gap between the two facets of the show. Both worlds that the show features are equal in importance and how interesting they are. It feels weird saying this about a plotline that involves getting to the bottom of a murder mystery and another that involves two girls forming an idol group, but here we are.

Ruby Kana Oshi No Ko Episode 5

Oshi no Ko Episode 5 had Ruby take centre stage for the first time in the series, as she had more screen time than Aqua in this episode. She wasn’t doing anything as important as he is trying to and isn’t half as interesting or introspective as him. Still, it made for a great change of pace not watching someone be so analytical about everything as Aqua does and go wherever the flow takes them. Aqua would have thought twice about what the muscle dude made the two girls do. Ruby? Not so much, and that is perfectly okay.

Aqua is also doing something that would take him closer to knowing the secrets Ai left behind, but it is difficult to predict what the show is going to do with this plotline. The one with Kana and Ruby was always going to be what it ended up being, and there wasn’t much subtlety from the show’s end to take us there. However, Aqua’s end has been especially slow ever since the first episode. Again, that is not bad, as I am still just as interested in seeing where all this leads as I was in the first episode. It is just taking a while to get there.

Kana has now received just about as many glamour frames as Ai did in the first episode. Seriously, something happens to the artists whenever she is in a frame that makes them pull out all stops and make everything she does the most detailed and beautiful part of the entire episode. She is turning out to be a much more important character than I initially assumed she would be. She is the character who keeps everything grounded from the supernatural things that have led to all this, and she is well-written.

Verdict

Oshi No Ko Episode 5 was a weird and fun episode that took the characters to some crazy places to get established. Things are getting built up nicely before the eventual and certain meltdown.
