Oppenheimer Ending Explained: What Exactly Did Albert Einstein and Robert Oppenheimer Talk About?

Oppenheimer Ending Explained: Christopher Nolan’s latest film has opened big and strong this weekend alongside Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. The film, although, three hours long has immense capacity to mesmerize you and hold you, which in itself should say a lot about the film.

Oppenheimer is written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan and, is based on the 2005 biography titled American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The book as well as the film is on J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who helped develop the first set of nuclear weapons on the Manhattan Project. It is produced by Syncopy Inc. and Atlas Entertainment.

The film features a big and brilliant cast. Cillian Murphy plays the titular character alongside Emily Blunt as Katherine Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, Josh Hartnett as Ernest Lawrence, Casey Affleck as Boris Pash, Rami Malek as David Hill, Kenneth Branagh as Niels Bohr, Benny Safdie as Edward Teller, Dylan Arnold as Frank Oppenheimer, Gustaf Skarsgård as Hans Bethe, David Krumholtz as Isidor Isaac Rabi, Matthew Modine as Vannevar Bush, David Dastmalchian as William L. Borden, Tom Conti as Albert Einstein amongst many others.

Oppenheimer Ending Explained

Nolan’s Oppenheimer ends with the revelation of the conversation that took place between J. Robert Oppenheimer and Albert Einstein in the year 1947, which is two years after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The conversation segment had been played out to the audience throughout the film. In fact, in his delusion, Lewis Strauss thought this conversation was about him and, Oppenheimer must have told Einstein something to sour the latter in regards to Strauss.

However, Nolan does not cheat us of this conversation. Thankful, we do not get an Inception-like ending left to our imagination and get to witness the conversation between the two great minds at the end of the film.

Throughout the film, the physicists of Oppie’s age treat Einstein as someone who did shed light on the world of quantum mechanics but, could never embrace it the way Oppie and his pals did. The final moments prove how wrong everyone has been because Einstein goes on to say, “You all thought that I’d lost the ability to understand what I’d started. Now, it’s your turn to deal with the consequences of your own achievement”, showing us how the mad scientist knew it all because he did deal with the curse of his discovery and, it was now Oppenheimer’s turn.

Einstein tries to have the last laugh as he goes on to deliver a dialogue that hints at how Oppenheimer is always going to be remembered and praised. He will be forgiven and have accolades for jewels but, by the end, it would be for the people, and not him, which is exactly what happens when we get to see a flash forward of our titular character’s life.

But, Oppenheimer does not let Einstein have the last laugh. Oppenheimer recounts the incident during the Manhattan Project when he had put forward to Einstein the calculations about the atomic bomb creating a chain reaction so strong that it would burn the atmosphere and destroy the entire world ultimately. Einstein is perplexed and asks him what about that incident, to which Oppenheimer replies, “I believe we did”, accepting that they had led the world to its destruction.

The chain reaction here is not just the atomic bomb test but, the drive and greed for power that mankind has had, which will lead them to develop a better weapon every time they find something good enough. This sours Einstein’s mood and the film closes with the expanding line of nuclear missiles from Oppenheimer’s vision from the earlier days.

Oppenheimer is now playing in theatres near you. So go, get your tickets and check out the film right away. Meanwhile, you can let us know in the comments down below what you feel about this latest release!
