We’re on the second week with The King’s Affection episode 3 and the episode starts with Ji-un being a peeping tom and watching Dam-i undress beside a pond. However, she gets to know of his location and throws a dagger at him and he fumbles with his excuses, apologizing. Dam-i is, understandably, pissed and refuses to let the incident go that easy.

She attacks him but he easily disarms her and is confused at her prowess and her skills. On the other hand, Prince Changun is on the prowl to find the prince. Ji-un takes Dam-i and runs away thinking that she is on the run. After a case of mistaken identity where the two try to run away from the king’s men, they jump from a cliff into the river in a bid to outrun their pursuers.

Word has reached Bok-dong and Lady Kim who are scared out of their minds for the Prince. They go out in search of him. Meanwhile, Dam-i has already reached the perimeter and looks out to her father taking care of his younger son. She wonders whether her father too wanted her to be killed because of her gender. In the present, Dam-i is again attacked by arrows and Hyun saves him this time.

As everyone tries to find out the identity of the assassin, Hyeong-seol tries to catch the culprits responsible. They catch hold of one of them, but the court is in consensus that it was probably the Queen’s people who wanted to assassinate the Crown Prince. There’s some friction between Dam-i and her stepmother, the latter of whom wants her son to ascend the throne. I am sure Dam-i’s secret identity and her stepmother’s disdain for her are going to come into play sooner rather than later.

That night, Dam-i has nightmares and is unable to sleep. She tries to practice her archery skills by is interrupted by Bok-dong. While they are having a conversation, she spots Ji-un lurking inside the palace and pursues him. Meanwhile, Ji-un is of the opinion that the person she met was a royal maid and is trying to find her.

He is obviously unable to find the royal maid because she’s the Crown Prince. As he’s going back, he meets his father who expresses his annoyance at his chosen profession. However, when asked when he will come back, Ji-un tells his father that he will never stop being a physician since the “cheap tricks” can help him save someone’s life. He further tells him that he will not be able to forget the heartbreak of seeing his father murder an innocent girl.

The next day in The King’s Affection episode 3, Bok-dong and Dam-i go out to seek Ji-un after getting to know his parentage. However, once at his home, they realise that he is out of station on an urgent matter. Taking Bok-dong to be a scholar though, he takes him to where Ji-un is – the courtesan’s house. Once inside, she finds Changun and some other people talking about her and how she seems very feminine.

As Changun starts to beat up his drinking buddy, Dam-i is discovered by is saved at the nick of time by Ji-un, obviously. However, Dam-i is undeterred and walks out to discipline her uncle. When asked why she is there, of all places, she tells him that she is there to meet a friend, meaning Ji-un. In the end, she leaves saying that if he doesn’t want to be beheaded for an assassination attempt, he should stop being cheeky.

Outside, Dam-i lets Ji-un know that he remembers him from back when they were kids in The King’s Affection episode 3. Ji-un is flattered and Dam-i comes back with Bok-dong. At home, Dam-i discusses the consequences of letting Ji-un live with Bok-dong. Although the latter would rather have Ji-un killed so that no one knows her secret, Dam-i is of the opinion that no one would even think that the Crown Prince is a girl.

Ki-jae calls fir Seok-jo and tells him to ask Ji-un to serve the Crown Prince when the envoy from Ming arrives.

The next day in The King’s Affection episode 3, Ji-un is shocked to come home and see that Jil-geum and Yeong-ji are being harassed. Later, they are all arrested for some unknown reason and his books are burnt. At the royal palace, Dam-i gets ready to meet her new tutor and is shocked to learn that it’s Ji-un.

Final Thoughts: The King’s Affection episode 3

The King’s Affection episode 3 was quite a slow episode with little to no intrigue. Sure, there were moments where you’d wonder whether Dam-i’s secret would come out, but we all know that it won’t. Also, why does she constantly need to be saved by Ji-un is beyond me. She’s next in line to the throne, I am sure she’d be able to save herself. Her relationship with Ji-un also seems a bit forced till now and I don’t feel much interest or sense significant chemistry between the two. Let’s hope the upcoming episodes are better than this.

The King’s Affection is streaming on Netflix.

REVIEW OVERVIEW

Overall

SUMMARY

The King's Affection episode 3 is quite slow and sometimes boring. The narration isn't such that it can hold on to our interests for too long.

  1. think jiun saves hwi two times where he is oblivious of the fact that the person he is trying to save is the crown prince or rather the same person and is capable to save herself also it is his nature to try to protect the lives so it is natural that he goes for it when he finds someone in trouble.

    • and I totally get it. However, they show Dam-i totally incapacitated during those moments. That’s what gets to me. She has got training for these kinds of things. Plus, she needs to be quick on her feet.
