The King’s Affection episode 10 starts with Jaeun taking a look at the list of maids and being very interested in Dam-i. Ji-un’s earlier revelation about his love for a palace maid has made him realise who Yi-hwi really is. He goes off to see Yi-hwi but when he gets to her standing beside the pond, he finds her with Ji-un. It’s the scene of him professing his feelings for her.
Yi-hwi tells Ji-un that they cannot be together since she’s the Crown Prince and he’s her subject. She asks him to forget that night and this conversation since nothing can ever happen between them. Jaeun watches Ji-un’s heart get broken and he seems to be a little sad as well. Back in her quarters, Yi-hwi is heartbroken as well. She goes back to go through the Yeon-seon paper that he had given her all those years ago, reliving the memories.
The next day, Ji-un is shocked to see Yi-hwi at his place. Bok-dong assures a scared Lady Kim that she will be back in time. Jaeun gets to know about it too and everyone is freaking out about it. Meanwhile, Yi-hwi is out with Ji-un to have lunch. The latter is shocked that she’s there and she explains that she couldn’t help thinking about the soup. They then spend a nice and happy day at the market. This is probably the happiest I have seen the two and probably the happiest we’ll see the two in some time.
As the day comes to an end, Ji-un asks Yi-hwi again why she came to meet him. She says that she wonders what it feels like to live a normal life and just be yourself. She has lived her whole life competing with others and meeting expectations and although people might want to live their lives like her, she envies people who live normally. Ji-un tells her that she can be herself, at least with her.
Yi-hwi then gives him a letter for a better position and he asks her whether she wants him to leave. She says like although it may sound selfish, she is about to get married soon. This is her answer to his feelings for her. She then leaves, leaving Ji-un to reflect on what just happened. Walking home alone and soaking wet, a crying Yi-hwi meets Jaeun who meets her with an umbrella. He then comforts her as she continues to cry.
The next day in The King’s Affection episode 10, Yi-hwi goes to meet King Hyejong to talk about getting married. They discuss him getting married, his relationship with Yi-hwi’s mother and how he failed to protect his family. He tells her that he doesn’t want her to make the same mistakes and thus, he wanted to buy her some time. He asks her whether she is sure that she wants to get married. At first, she says that she is but her father’s words might have had an impact on her.
Yoon Hyeong-seol’s doubts regarding Ga-on gets intensified when a member of his army tells him that the person they caught, couldn’t have tried to kill Yi-hwi. He follows Ga-on that night, but that goes in vain when he murders almost everyone and runs away. Hyeong-seol is shocked to learn that Ga-on has gone to meet the King and rushes fearing the worst. However, he finds the King completely fine and decides to tell him what he knows later.
Later, Queen Dowager and Ki-jae discuss who is going to marry Yi-hwi. Outside, we see So-eun looking very scared while standing outside for the selection process of the Queen. We see that she isn’t ready for it since women who get rejected thrice cannot get married. At the selection, however, So-eun seems to have won Queen Dowager’s heart with her smart answer.
When the process is over, So-eun is shocked to see that Yi-hwi waiting for her in The King’s Affection episode 10. Yi-hwi apologises for concealing her identity the last time they met and So-eun apologises for being rude. They go for a walk where she tells So-eun whether she’d like to walk the path of life with her. I am confused as to how she will tell her that she’s actually a woman and whether So-eun will accept this.
Anyway, as Yi-hwi bids goodbye, she asks So-eun whether she has feelings for anyone else and the latter tells her in no uncertain words that she does. However, Yi-hwi tells her that she cannot stop going after her that easily. On her way home, she meets Ji-un and tells him about So-eun. However, he says that he wants to talk to her desperately whenever they meet unexpectedly. Additionally, it breaks his heart that she wants him to leave the palace.
The next day in The King’s Affection episode 10, Yi-hwi has a lecture with Ji-un. When she sees him, she tries to leave, but he tells her that he will answer her question after the lecture since it will be his last. Throughout, he thinks back to their journey till now and he’s clearly very deep into it. After the lecture ends, she asks him what he thinks of doing with her offer. He, however, asks her to accompany him somewhere.
Again back at the town border where they had come the first day of Ji-un’s lecture, Ji-un tells Yi-hwi that he will live like how he used to live. Hopefully, that will make her happy since he wants her to be happy forever. However, he cannot accept her offer and will use any excuse available to meet her. He then gives her his resignation letter and leaves her crying.
Final Thoughts: The King’s Affection episode 10
Oh, man. The King’s Affection has got me hooked and how! Although there are several logistical problems in the Crown Prince’s upcoming marriage, the tension has totally got me. Plus, Yi-hwi’s relationship with Ji-un, too, is absolutely deliciously on the edge. The next episode’s teaser shows them kissing each other and her somehow murdering someone. So, it’s definitely going to be very dramatic. This episode was more of a baseline to create whatever is going to happen after this so it was slightly less on the drama. Regardless, it’s a tease that’s totally worth the watch.
The King’s Affection is streaming on Netflix.
