Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 9 recap:

Restarting from the last episode, Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 9 starts with Hye-jin tightly hugging Du-sik after being scared out of her mind. Yes, this is about this rapist creep who has been harassing and scaring the women of Gongjin.

Du-sik is taken aback at the sudden outburst of affection and when Hye-jin realizes what’s going on, she awkwardly inches away from him. That’s when a random stranger brings Hye-jin her phone. He seems rather innocent, but how do we know that this isn’t the creep? We don’t, but that’s not the matter right now. Hye-jin and Du-sik awkwardly talk about various things, like how they make really sturdy phones these days in Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 9.

As they part ways, both feel the heat of the moment that just passed them. While Du-sik tries to remind himself that his heart is beating fast because of he was startled, Hye-jin is confused as to why she’s so hot all of a sudden and stands in front of the open refrigerator. At night, both are restless and unable to sleep.

The next day in Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 9, Du-sik is on his way somewhere and helps out an elderly person to refuel the latter’s car who is unable to operate the automatic pumps. It goes rather smoothly, but neither is unfamiliar with the other’s identity. Unfortunately, though, the elderly man mistakes Du-sik’s helpful nature with him looking down on him… which is… not true.

Anyway, Hye-jin, too, is thinking about her embrace with Du-sik. While she’s taking a run, she meets Nam-sook who tells her that she knows about her “passionate embrace” with Du-sik. Hye-jin is obviously very flustered. Nam-sook further says that she knows that Hye-jin is confused between Du-sik and Seong-hyeon, but she has not told anyone these things and asks her not to worry. Obviously, this makes Hye-jin worried even more.

Anyway, trying to get over the shock of this interaction, Hye-jin comes face to face with her father and she’s very confused and shocked in Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 9. It seems like this is the last thing that she was expecting that day and is probably not very enthusiastic about this interaction.

Anyway, she takes them home and her father asks for the bathroom. Unfortunately for literally everyone involved, he bumps into Du-sik who is there fixing her shower! I mean, it’s incredibly awkward for Hye-jin and her family and Du-sik seems as unbothered as ever. It’s so surreal. As Hye-jin tries to throw him out hastily, her father stops him and introduces himself.

He then proceeds to manhandle Du-sik for spending time with his adult daughter who is right in front of them watching this going down. Listen, I know how relationships work in Asian households. But really, don’t manhandle innocent people. Actually, don’t manhandle anyone!

Anyway, Du-sik takes this opportunity to be absolutely an ass and hilariously calls himself Hye-jin’s boyfriend in Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 9. She is mortified and can’t do anything but look at them both shocked. Hye-jin’s father is quite shocked as well and finally lets go of his hand. When she asks him later why he said something like that while peeling apples for her family, he says that he had no option – he had to survive!

Anyway, as the four of them sit down to chat, Hye-jin’s father starts interrogating Du-sik rather forcefully but Du-sik takes them on with humour. It’s just a weird and funny scene. On one hand, the casual sexism is infuriating, but I liked her mother’s responses. At least someone’s trying to offset the sexism. Anyway, after Hye-jin shuts down the interrogation, her parents decide to go on a tour of the town and Hye-jin’s father asks Du-sik to take them. Everyone is shocked but agrees at the end.

The funniest part comes in after this, though – there’s a mass text chain that says that everyone has to play a part in the boyfriend ruse and whoever contributes the most will get 30% off at Hye-jin’s clinic. Everyone is just so excited, it’s hilarious.

As the four are out and about, Du-sik and Hye-jin’s step-mother tease her father for being sulky all the time in Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 9. Obviously, he hates it, but before that can be addressed, they are met by the townspeople. It’s just… so horrible. I can’t even put it into words how horrifyingly cringy and hilarious it is.

But the excitement is yet to come in the form of Seong-hyeon, who is mortified that Du-sik is pretending to be Hye-jin’s boyfriend. He rushes over to her parents and introduces himself. Her parents are immediately taken in by him, much to Du-sik’s annoyance. Seong-hyeon tries to impress them in any way that he can and invites them to his set.

As the five are having a snack and talking about Hye-jin, her father seems to have taken quite a bit with Seong-hyeon. However, the real kicker is when Hye-jin takes out her car keys and both Du-sik and Seong-hyeon notice the alpaca keychain that the latter had given her. While Seong-hyeon is obviously quite happy, Du-sik seems bothered in Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 9.

Anyway, Seong-hyeon’s magic works on Hye-jin’s father, but Du-sik strikes with a discussion on how to make orchids bloom. The two then play a game which Hye-jin’s father invariably loses and thus, becomes sulky. He’s unhappy with everything around him and Du-sik realizes how similar he and Hye-jin are. Regardless, he asks them why they aren’t close and decides that they should play a game to break the ice in Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 9.

However, it is when Du-sik makes her father eat seafood is when she realizes how well he blends in with her family. There’s just something about him, isn’t it? However, it is when Hye-jin’s father asks Du-sik about his family and realizes that he is an orphan is when things get really awkward. He becomes a bit hostile as if Du-sik having no one to call family is just the worst thing in this world. I mean, ok.

Anyway, all of that is sorted after the father-daughter throw around a few choice words. Well, it’s sorted because of Du-sik and Hye-jin’s stepmom. Later, in Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 9, Du-sik tells her father the truth about his relationship with Hye-jin, but also mentions that he wishes her to finds someone who truly deserves her. Hearing this, her father says that it might just be Du-sik himself. Of course, he’s pretty pleased about the compliment.

As the day comes to an end and it’s time to bid them farewell, Hye-jin’s father asks Du-sik secretly why he talks to him so casually. The latter says that it sounds friendlier that way. To this, he replies, “not to me, bas**rd” and drives off. Du-sik is taken aback in Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 9 and when her stepmom tells her father later that he seems to like Du-sik, he looks rather flustered.

Hye-jin then follows Du-sik home and asks him a bunch of questions, the main one being – what does he plan to do with his life and if this is just a break for him. However, when he informs her that he is content with his life in Gongjin, she seems a bit sad. Later, in Hometown Cha Cha Cha episode 9, both Du-sik and Seong-hyeon realise that they have to tell Hye-jin about their feelings or might be too late – more of that in the next episode!
