Explained Season 3 Episode 5 ‘The End of Oil’ is now out on Netflix. Actor Ethan Hawke is the narrator of the 24-minute episode. After making us smile by telling about dogs, the makers have again tackled a serious topic.
The description for The End of Oil reads – Oil led to huge advancements — and vast inequities. As the planet warms, why is it so hard to turn away from fossil fuels, and can it be done in time?

Narrator Ethan Hawke starts Netflix’s Explained Season 3 Episode 5 by telling us about oil, how it is extracted, and its harmful effect on the environment. Today’s episode features guests like Katharine Hayhoe (Climate Scientist), Daniel Yergin (Pulitzer-Winning Author, The Prize and The New Map), Nnimo Bassey (Environmental Activist) and a few more.
In ‘The End of Oil‘ episode of Explained series, the narrator and the expert guests discuss how something that has helped in the world’s development is now playing a role in harming our civilisation. When oil was discovered, no one would have thought that it would play such a vital role in everyone’s day-to-day lives.
Oil is used in many industrial sectors to run an engine, cars, cook food, make plastics, solvents, and a lot more. With time, scientists started noticing how it also emits harmful contents, which directly affect the Earth’s rising temperature. If that’s not enough, oil spills, factory fires, or oil wars also add more to the trouble. It hits hard considering how the last two years have been.

Vox-Netflix’s Explained Season 3 Episode 5 The End of Oil episode focuses mainly on Nigeria’s history of oil. Not many people are aware, but Nigeria is the largest oil producer in Africa. But just like most of the histories in the world, Nigeria’s oil history has some tragedy, slavery, protests, and more such disturbing events. Guest Nnimo Bassey speaks in detail about the same.
The End of Oil also focuses on how the fossil fuel that has got countries fighting, causing global warming, is also nearing the verge of extinction. It’s a known fact that is taught to many during their school days. I was expecting the episode to go deeper into oil wars (Iran-Iraq, Gulf War, etc.). I would have loved to know where the US stands in all of this as it is the largest oil-consuming country in the world.
Netflix’s Explained Season 3 Episode 5 Recap: Last Word
Overall, today’s episode explained the importance of oil in the world, how it affects the world, and Nigerian oil history. But I wish the creators have dug more rather than giving us what’s on the surface.
