Netflix’s Explained Season 3 Episode 1 Recap: Bitter Reality of Sugar!

Explained Season 3 Episode 1, Sugar, is now out on Netflix. The series is known for explaining topics that affect everyone on a day-to-day basis. After two successful seasons comprising 30 episodes, they started the new one on a sweet note to warn people.

Just like the previous seasons, the latest season of Netflix’s Explained features guests stars narrating the episode. Going by the list, Explained Season 3 Episode 1 narrator is Keri Russel. The makes have described the episode as, “Once crucial for survival, sugar now poses a health risk. Is therea way to satisfy our primeval cravingf or sweetness in a healthy, balanced way?”

Vox’s Explained Season 3 Episode 1, Sugar, starts with the narrator saying – The story of humans is really a story of extractions. The narrator explains how we’ve extracted simpler ways of living by using copper, coals and sugar too. The episode stars the Creator of Sugarfix, Dr Darria Long, who tells us that our ancestors would enjoy the flavour of sugar from fruits. But as humans evolved, sugar became a pure source of energy and a vital part of people’s diet.

The narrator, Dr Long and Dr Kimber Stanhope explain how unhealthy people’s sugar eating habits are. They explain how it provides nothing essential to the body and numerous ways in which it harms people. The makers tell us how obesity, heart attack, and Type 2 diabetes are caused by extreme consumption of sugary dishes (cakes, chocolates, ice creams, etc.). We also see how companies made it worse by promoting (misleading) their sugar brands as ‘healthy and effective for weight loss!

The guest doctors in Netflix’s Explained Season 3 Episode 1 also explains why people are addicted to this sweet thing. Dr Long says that when people eat a sweet dish, they experience the same level of satisfaction one gets from sex or drugs. Hence, people get addicted to eating sweet food, and many always have room for dessert.

The Netflix-Vox series makers also explain how various scientists found various substitutes for sugar – Saccharin, Cyclamate, Aspartame and Sucralose. These substitute or artificial sweeteners managed to replace sugar for a while. But rumours led to people switching to sugarcane granules and its products again. The doctors also clear the misconceptions related to these artificial sweeteners and share the alternatives for enjoying the sweet dishes.

Overall, the episode was sweet and short, with great insight. Most people are aware that sugar is harmful, but they can’t stop themselves. It’s an admirable attempt to explain to the viewers that everything they consume is not healthy. But the question is – Is it enough to convince them to cut down on sugar?

Explained Season 3 Episode 1 is currently streaming on Netflix.

  1. I felt like this episode made sugar seem too harmless. I’ve been a sugar addict all my life and it has caused me to become chronically ill. Telling people to simply “eat less sugar” and claiming it’s not too unhealthy if you limit it, is not gonna cut it. They also completely left out the crazy power the sugar lobby has and all the fake studies created by scientists they paid off, making sugar seem less dangerous. They also didn’t mention how politicians are constantly failing to protect kids from the industry, e.g. failing to regulate ads that specifically target young viewers to get them hooked on sweets and sugary cereal early on in life.

    • Yes. I think their main goal was to just focus on health effects, without going deep. That’s why I’ve asked ‘Is it enough to convince people to cut down on sugar?’

  2. I was disappointed that there was no mention of the history of sugar and slavery and colonialism and the birth of capitalism with it. The history of sugar is so dirty! And yeah my takeaway was consume significantly less sugar but how much less? Also, underprivileged communities do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables but instead have 1$ stores with products full of sugar. Yet again i feel the blame is on the individual and I am so tired of hearing things like “there is a rise in obesity” Well shouldn’t we ask whose fault it is? I was so excited to watch this episode but I am so disappointed 🙁
