My Dress-Up Darling Episode 12 Review: The Final Episode

It’s time to go on a final ride with Marin and Gojo, so let’s hope My Dress-up Darling Episode 12 is a good one! Will the obvious get revealed? Let’s find out in this review!

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 12 Overview

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 12 Title

My Dress-Up Darling or Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi Wo Suru in original Japanese is a romance and slice of life anime based on a popular manga written series by Shinichi Fukuda. It is being adapted into the medium of anime by Studio CloverWorks, a studio that hasn’t exactly been having the best time of its existence right about now. The studio has faced immense criticism in just the previous year for how it handled two anime properties, Wonder Egg Priority and The Promised Neverland Season 2.

Keisuke Shinohara is directing the show. He has been directly involved in the productions of various anime series in the past, including Wonder Egg Priority and Devilman: Crybaby. Finales are weird in a way that they have expectations attached to them regardless of the quality of what came before. Even if the content before the finale happens to be mediocre, the sheer concept of something you devoted your precious time to coming to an end invites a ton of attention and hope that might feel unwarranted at times. This counts double if we talk about shows like My Dress-Up Darling because they are slice-of-life shows that don’t follow the traditional arc structure that other anime genres do.

Thus, when all this is considered, the final episode of the first season of this show was as great as it could have been. Looking at it from a more critical eye, it was more of the same as what we have already seen the show do multiple times before. However, there were a couple of key differences that the showrunners still managed to put in there to make it more akin to an episode that would fit as the conclusion to a season. For one, it featured a sweet recap of all the characters accomplished throughout the first season. For another, the animators put their absolute heart and soul into making it the most beautiful episode yet.

Drowning My Dress-Up Darling Episode 12

This episode looked magical in more ways than one. The obvious highlight here was the lighting, as the animators were somehow able to capture the lighting of a sunny day in the water, a fireworks festival, and a night alone together and represent each of them beautifully. Each frame looked meticulous in the way it was shaded and how the light shined over the characters. The framing was also gorgeous, and this episode was an absolute treat to look at.

Some shows (calling out World’s End Harem) somehow spend the entirety of their budget before the final episodes and are left with an empty husk of a finale that looks nothing like the show looked previously. Needless to say, the same wasn’t the case for My Dress-up Darling Episode 12. The episode looked and sounded great, but that’s not the only thing it was great at. It was also successful in showcasing just how far along the relationship of our main characters has come and how much they have learned throughout the course of this season.

This episode had many cute Marin-Gojo moments, including a trip to the school, a horror movie watch along, and a trip to the fireworks festival, a staple of almost every slice of life show. It was sweet seeing them interact and marine helping Gojo come out of his shell a little more. The series also concluded in the best possible way, with a Marin smile that could conquer worlds. As of right now, we don’t know if the series will be back anytime soon. But we sure do hope so.

Verdict

My Dress-Up Darling Episode 12 was a near-perfect finale to a show that swept everyone off their feet this season. It was heartfelt and emotional alongside being tremendously animated, and you can’t really ask for any more than that.
