Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 9 Review: A Scary Blast From The Past

Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 9 was perhaps the most unique episode of the entire show so far and was among the best of this season. Let’s see how it went in this review!

Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 9 Overview

Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 9 Title

Mushoku Tensei, also known as Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation or Mushoku Tensei Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu in original Japanese, is an adventure, drama and fantasy anime based on a light novel series written by Rifujin na Magonote and illustrated by Sirotaka. This episode is also known as Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 9 and Mushoku Tensei Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu Season 2 Episode 9.

The latest season of the anime is being directed by Hiroki Hirano, who served as an assistant director of the second part of the show’s first season. However, the studio that produces and adapts the anime remains the same, as that responsibility again falls to Studio Bind, who haven’t really done anything other than Mushoku Tensei. Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 9 Review- The White Mask

Scared Rudeus Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 9

I will use an analogy here that might be unfamiliar to some people, so I will do my best to be thorough. In live-action, long-running TV shows, there is a very specific kind of episode that is produced for budgetary reasons. The episode usually focuses on a single location to lower production costs. It is extremely dialogue-heavy and character-driven, given there isn’t much else to go on there. Some shows made absolute magic out of these episodes, Bottle Episodes as they are called. “Fly” from Breaking Bad and “The Chinese Restaurant” from Seinfeld are two of the most-cited examples of great Bottle Episodes.

The concept isn’t very prevalent in anime, but if it were, we would talk about Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 9 as one of the best anime Bottle Episodes we have ever seen. It was dialogue-heavy, focused in a single location for most of its runtime, and a single conversation was enough to hold the viewer’s attention for the entire duration of it. This was also perhaps why the previous couple of episodes were light on plot- because if we were going to have an episode like this, it is best that there are some degrees of separation between it and anything else.

Fitz vs Shizuka Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 9

We discovered so much in Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 9 that I can’t, and don’t want to, discuss because of spoilers. You should absolutely go and check this episode for yourself, as it is an extremely rewarding experience for anyone patient enough to let the show do its thing without caring too much if the plot didn’t move forward by a lot. This is a series that takes its time building up characters and arcs before paying them off and always has a purpose behind all the decisions that it makes. The show has earned enough confidence from its audience, and it is episodes like this that help maintain it.

This episode’s unsung hero (or heroine) was Fitz or Sylphiette. We started the episode by realising the true reason why she hasn’t yet revealed her true identity to Rudeus and ended it with a burst of emotion from her, which was unlike anything we have ever seen from her. She had deserved a moment like this for a while now, and it was a natural reaction from her that no one would ever give a second thought- who wouldn’t act like this after learning what she did? This moment helped make Sylphiette a lot more relatable than she was.

The guttural reaction that Rudeus still has upon encountering someone involved in one of his deaths was riveting to see. There are few shows that can keep a flame like this burning for this long without letting it extinguish, as the show did a fantastic job of keeping Rudeus’ fight with Orsted fresh in all of our minds right before this appearance by the masked lady. She had a lot to say, but she said just enough to make this episode one of the show’s best ever. On an ending note, the amount of detail in the worldbuilding of this anime is insane. The way this episode did languages was wonderful.

Verdict

Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 9 was an episode that answered a few questions about the show’s world, raised many more, and did it all in a way that spellbounded everyone who tuned in for at least 22 minutes.
