Murdaugh Murders A Southern Scandal Review: Docuseries Without Conclusive Evidence; Remains a Scandal

The chilling three-part docuseries, Murdaugh Murders A Southern Scandal, directed by Emmy nominees Jenner Furst and Jennifer Willoughby Nason, brings to light some of the intense details regarding the mysterious deaths spanning from 2015 to 2023 that straightup link to the Murdaugh family. As Alex Murdaugh case is ongoing, the decision to release this docuseries has raised tension among the residents of Hamptom County. The world is waiting for the truth behind Paul and Maggie Murdaugh’s murder and Stephen Smith, Gloria and Mallory’s death.

The official Netflix description reads,

Survivors reflect on the shocking boat crash that killed vibrant teenager Mallory Beach – and the demons that haunted troubled driver Paul Murdaugh.

The cast of docuseries includes certain representational actors and the real people associated with Paul Murdaugh and his family, such as Morgan Doughty, Miley Altman, Connor Cook, Anthony Cook, etc.

Unlike other docuseries that covered the Murdaugh family, this particular one dived deep into Paul Murdaugh’s persona. Starting from his relationship with Morgan, the way he abused her, his alcohol addiction, his yearn for familial love and his attachment to his maid Gloria were all neatly explained by those who were really close with him, notably his former girlfriend, Morgan. She revealed some graphic details about how her once a good relationship turned severely abusive.

We also get a deep insight about Mallory, who died after Paul caused a boat accident. The docuseries presents explicit photos of all the survivors. One interesting factor about the series is that all the survivors and their parents came forth to express their side of the story when Murdaugh family tried to seal their mouth.

The docuseries slowly builds the family’s power via Paul’s arrogance and how his family saves him from jail time even after Mallory dies. This is when it’s evident that the Murdaugh family could have covered too many similar stories. As expected, cases that date back to 2015 are linked to the family, and it all comes to light after Alex Murdaugh gets arrested for felony and homicide charge. While the case is ongoing and he hasn’t yet been convicted as guilty, the series shows strong opinions on why he could be the bad guy. However, no conclusive evidence is provided.

While the docuseries will help us to learn much about the Murdaugh dynasty, it fails to give a strong notion on how terrible Alex Murdaugh could be. Since the information provided is old and pretty well-known, the only intriguing factor is the main cast, which is Paul’s friends and ex-girlfriend sharing their experience.

What Are We Left With From the Series?

Is Alex Murdaugh behind the crimes of Stephen Smith, Paul, Gloria and Maggie? We’re unsure. While Stephen’s death charges are dropped, there are chances of it rising back if journalists find more evidence. We’re still unaware of Buster Murdaugh’s backstory. While the docuseries reveals his possible secret relationship with Stephen Smith, again, there isn’t any evidence.

Did Alex Murdaugh murder Stephen Smith, Gloria, Maggie and Paul, or did he cover them on behalf of someone? Where was Buster all the while? Why did the family own so many guns, yet nobody checked in them? Why weren’t the guns seized? Did Mallory get killed, or was it really an accident? Where are the family members of Stephen Smith?

Murdaugh Murders A Southern Scandal Final Thoughts

While the series fails to give any shocking truth, it is aligned neatly in a way we all get to know about the Murdaugh dynasty through the lens of those close to Paul Murdaugh and Gloria. Morgan is a prominent witness as she has been with the family since she dated Paul.
