Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 5 Review- Last Man Standing

What can even be said about Dimple at this moment? He has been a surprisingly helpful but always conniving presence in the world of Mob Psycho for ages, and despite having helped Mob with a lot in the past, it was just a matter of time until he started to consolidate power again. He struck when the iron was scorching and took control of the chaos the presence of the giant broccoli caused. Mob has to take down someone he liked and expected better from, which is a fantastic dynamic, especially since Dimple knows how strong Mob really is and can choose to target his weaknesses.

I wouldn’t be surprised if ONE, the creator and author of the source material, has some experience with cults, as he is able to extremely precisely capture the exact mindset that makes people be involved in one and not be able to escape it once they are in. The mob mentality (pardon the pun) and the fear of missing out on what your close ones are doing is a powerful feeling, and one that the cultists are easily able to justify with their words despite the actual criminal acts they might be performing. In that way, this was an extremely real and hard-hitting episode.

The dialogue writing here was phenomenal, as despite Mob not being able to explain why exactly he was hunting Dimple down with his words very well, his actions, as well as the little he said, worked very well with Dimple’s incessant babbling. Dimple would try to get Mob in through hook or crook, utilizing his various social circles and worldly attachments to convince him to join his side, recognizing his formidable strength, having known him for this long. Their prior connection led to some great moments in Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 5.

Various past events were also referenced, giving it a final boss feel, but in an inverse way, if that makes sense to you. The final boss, in this case, wasn’t Dimple, but Mob, who you knew would wipe the floor with Dimple’s remains if he ever got to 100%. Therein lay the intrigue in this episode, seeing what would ultimately knock Mob over the top and how Dimple tried to avoid that by laying traps for him. Once again, the dialogue deserves praise for being able to explain the intricacies without being too blatant and still keeping them the same characters as they always were.

The animation and soundtrack were also tremendous in how they were implemented. The environmental design of the broccoli lent itself very well to some great moments, and the soundtrack had you as high on anticipation as it could have. You were waiting to hear “Explosion Of Mob’s Feelings” the entire episode, and when the slow-roll started, it was perfectly executed. The pacing of this episode was also great, making for a near-perfect showdown between two friends turned foes. The show is at a crossroads right now, one that should make future episodes very interesting.
Verdict
Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 5 was a fantastic addition to a season that is turning out to be more mature and sinister than the show’s previous outings. Things are looking up for the series right now.
