Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 4 Review- This Was Uncomfortable

If this week was an indication of a tone change in the series towards darker and more intense storytelling, I am all for it. This was a fantastic episode that pushed the limits of how uncomfortable this series can get while still trying to tell a highly compelling story. It was a fascinating tale of trying to explore new boundaries while sticking to what makes this series work in the first place- a deep exploration of the human psyche through the mind of one introverted underachiever. Mob was fantastic in this episode, so let’s talk about him first.

He has been a fascinating character because he isn’t the timid and simple character we knew at the start. He has evolved greatly into someone who can make decisions for himself and knows what is right and what isn’t. He is still a little susceptible to making a few bad decisions and being too gullible, but he has come very far in his growth with the help of everything he has learned while working as an esper under Reigen. He sets out to accomplish something gigantic in Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 4, and while he gets some pushback, he deals with them admirably.

Hanazawa also made a very welcome appearance in this episode as an extremely competent esper, also meaning to take down the new leader of the Psycho Helmet cult. That’s right- a cult. We called it a religion a while back, but this is way too creepy and non-consensual to be a religion. This is a fantastic take on a cult and how quickly mass hysteria can lead people to their certain doom. We can make stories about how things like these can help certain people, but the show tells it like it really is- brainwashing. Things are much less subtle here, but that’s not a complaint.

We also learn about the Cult Leader’s identity, and the show sets this plot point up very well. It didn’t come as too much of a surprise just because of how well-written and true to character this was. Therein lies the strength of Mob Psycho’s writing- the characters it portrays might get a little over the top from time to time, but if you look hard enough, you will find the exact kind of person the show is portraying in our world. You can see how some people would realistically fall for this leader, which makes everything even more terrifying. This could be someone you know, and the thought is extremely scary.

Who thinks of stuff like the giant Broccoli in the middle of the city? What would have been a random throwaway joke in any other anime is a major plot point in Mob Psycho 100 and the headquarters of the biggest threat in the anime to boot. All the characters in this episode played their parts to perfection, from Reigen to Ritsu and Hanazawa to Mob. The atmosphere was very well set, and the mixture of comedy and horror is one that the show does very well anyways. This was a very successful episode at whatever it was it tried to do.
Verdict
Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Episode 4 was delightfully creepy and just what you’d want as a continuation of the previous episode. This will be heralded as one of the show’s best episodes when it is all said and done.
