Minions: The Rise of Gru Review: Packs Good Laughter and Entertainment

Minions: The Rise of Gru features (voice acting) Steve Carell as Gru, Pierre Coffin as the Minions, Michelle Yeoh as Master Chow, Taraji P Henson as Belle Bottom, Jean-Claude Van Damme as Jean Clawed, Lucy Lawless as Nunchuck, Alan Arkin as Wild Knuckles, Dolph Lundgren as Svengeance, Russell Brand as Dr Nefario. Directed by Kyle Balda, the story is by Brian Lynch and Matthew Fogel and the screenplay is penned by Fogel.

The synopsis reads, “Long before he becomes the master of evil, Gru (Oscar® nominee Steve Carell) is just a 12-year-old boy in 1970s suburbia, plotting to take over the world from his basement. It’s not going particularly well. When Gru crosses paths with the Minions, including Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto—a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please—this unexpected family joins forces. Together, they build their first lair, design their first weapons, and strive to execute their first missions.”

Minions: The Rise of Gru Review Contains No Spoilers

In Minions: The Rise of Gru, we see how Gru became the villain we saw in Despicable Me movies. The story is set in the 70s when Vicious 6 is looking for a new member to join as a villain. Gru wants to be a villain, especially like Wild Knuckles, the leader of Vicious 6. However, things are not easy as the villains themselves have problems within.

Due to the problems between Vicious 6 members and Wild Knuckles, Gru’s dream of becoming a villain is greatly affected. He even lands in major trouble due to some reason. But Gru has his minions who wouldn’t let anyone harm their Mini Boss.

Minions: The Rise of Gru, the prequel helps us understand Gru and his lovely bond with the minions better. It’s adorable to see how dedicated Gru was to becoming the best villain in the world. He goes through the auditioning process, gets insulted for being a kid, has a bad experience when he meets his idol/favourite Wild Knuckles and almost loses his life. Yet, nothing changes his mind about being a villain.

Minions: The Rise of Gru Still 1

In those 1 hour 30 minutes, Gru meets several people who become a major part of his life in the Despicable Me movies. However, we also see that no matter what happens, his army of minions, especially Kevin, Bob, Stuart and Otto, are always by his side.

The Rise of Gru has abundant drama, twists, cuteness, entertainment, silliness and goofiness. It’s a wonderful watch for kids. Even adults will have a good laugh while watching the wild adventures of Gru, Kevin, Bob, Otto and Stuart. Along with comedy and heartwarming scenes, we also see some magic and many Kung-fu action scenes.

Steve Carell has voiced Gru so well, even when he’s a kid. I loved the modulation in Gru’s voice whenever he tried to talk like a scary villain. Pierre Coffin has voiced the Minions, and he will definitely make you laugh with his gibberish talks. Taraji P Henson sounds scary as Belle Bottom. Her character is also the most vicious one.
