From the deep sea of perennial new Netflix projects rising to the surface, Luckiest Girl Alive is an upcoming mystery movie based on the novel of the same name written by Jessica Knoll. The author is also involved with the screenplay of the film starring Mila Kunis.
The official Netflix synopsis of the movie reads:
“A writer’s perfectly crafted New York City life starts to unravel when a true-crime documentary forces her to confront her harrowing high school history.”
The trailer lays down a sweet and fulfilling life led by Kunis’ character Ani Fanelli in the Luckiest Girl Alive trailer. She has it all, and what she doesn’t, she’s going to achieve that very soon as well. Editor at the New York Times Magazine, check. “Getting married in a lavish but tasteful ceremony”, check. And while her statements don’t quite ring an alarm in our minds, her revelation that she is “this close to the life no one thought I deserved”, definitely raises a brow.

As precedented, the very next moment proves that it was in fact a faint foreshadowing of what is to come, but also a reminder of what happened to her. A part of her life that was clearly swept away from sight is back to haunt her again. What seems to be a fun gathering, soon digs into her past memories as she meets one of her old teachers, Mr. Larson (Scoot McNairy), who at first glance fails to recognize Ani, or as he knew her, TifAni.
Worse only seems to get worse as Kunis is approached by a man who claims to be working on a documentary, covering the infamous incident at her school. And it seems the truth has been hidden in plain sight from all the people she found in her life after reinventing herself.

Whatever the trauma, the trailer leaves it open-ended for us to find out in the movie itself. The protagonist in question however is left fragmented as she can’t recognize herself after all that’s happened. Only to add to the trouble, a former classmate threatens her to keep it quiet.
Who is she? What happened to her? What dark secrets is she harboring? Will she ever feel like she’s in control of her story or will her past always trail her from behind? To find out, tune into the movie coming out on Netflix next month.
