Meme Boys is a retelling of every college goers life and will make you nostalgic… well, somewhat since not all of us were meme makers. But, it will definitely bring back some fond (and some not so fond) memories.
Following four college kids, their extremely strict dean and what the only way the modern college goers know how to – memes. The series gives us a very good reason to dislike the new dean as well as a reason to want our protagonists to succeed.

Our dean of Apoorva University will remind you much of Viru Sahastrabuddhe and several other people from various other universities and schools in our movie worlds. You will love to hate Guru Somasundaram’s autocratic dean, who is too self-absorbed to understand the problems among his wards.
However, isn’t that the problem everywhere? For anyone who has stayed in hostels or been involved in university matters, you would know how it feels like when your basic rights are violated. We all know universities are more interested in their reputations than their students, most of the time. Thus, you resonate with these kids who just want to live their lives.
And yes, I know that universities have a lot at stake – one wrong move can destroy lives. But, striking that delicate balance is what’s important when it comes to handling impressionable and charged-up kids who just got their first whiff of freedom. You can’t force 19-year-olds to do your bidding – there has to be some sort of understanding and compromise involved.

Meme Boys showcases what happens when you don’t understand the younger generation’s problems and try to go the ‘my way or the highway’ route. Kids rebel, and your reputation goes down the drain as a result. The series does a great job at keeping things funny and interesting as it tackles both sides of this online war.
Apoorva University’s dean might almost be like Mussolini, but his character also has some funny bits that are just hilarious. He’s usually very serious, angry and all-around annoying, but there are some moments where he can’t keep up with the new age lingo and asks some obvious questions in the most unassuming way – it’s just so funny.
However, what I must mention here is that Meme Boys is not new in any way. The concept isn’t novel or unique, and similar situations have been tackled in shows many times before. Getting memes into the mix is the only new thing that the show brings forth, but the situations in which these kids get into or the countermeasures that the dean takes are things we have seen and heard.

For those of you who like and enjoy memes, Meme Boys brings forth some very funny ones rooted in Tamil pop culture. If you’re not familiar with Tamil media, understanding the memes might be a bit difficult. It’s still funny, but funnier still is the dean being flattered by the smallest of flatteries coming towards him.
Meme Boys also showcases the power of the internet and social media. We know this; we’ve seen this multiple times in several pieces of media. Here, we go into the heart of those who make up one of the biggest users of the internet in their everyday lives. It’s also through the internet that the different factions try to find validation, whether it be the dean trying to hold his image together or the kids trying to bring about change and be relevant. It’s a believable look into social media’s hold on our lives as well and how just one small meme can cause a storm in an otherwise calm ocean!
Our four college boys are excellent as the people we follow them double down against the dean to post memes against his over-the-top rules. Guru Somasundaram is great as well, and at some point, his silly antics will actually make you hate him and asks why he is the way that he is!
Summing Up: Meme Boys

Meme Boys is a funny dramedy with not much at stake. It’s entertaining and will remind you of your school days. You’ll rage on behalf of the students and laugh at the dean, just like you did when you were in university. Although it isn’t extremely new, it’s still an engaging watch, and the short episodes won’t drudge the runtime more than necessary.
Meme Boys is streaming on SonyLIV.
