Mat Kilau makes its way to Netflix and this Malay patriotic film is action-packed as the locals fight for their freedom from British colonialism, but it also brings forth many questions. Directed by Syamsul Yusof, the movie stars Adi Putra, Beto Kusyairy, Fattah Amin, Yayan Ruhian, alongside other cast members.
The plot of the movie follows the Malaysian historical figure Mat Kilau who had fought against the British colonists in Pahang before Independence.
Netflix’s synopsis of the movie reads:
After British armies invade Pahang, a legendary warrior leads his people into guerilla warfare to protect their home from the threat of colonization.

Like many patriotic movies, Mat Kilau too starts by showing us the brutality of the colonisers on the natives of the country. An English officer with a gun who is ruthless with his ways, and soldiers surrounding him follow every single order given by him.
The movie also brings selfish traitors, jealous subordinates, politics within the nobles, and so on because it is hard to complete these films without such angering elements.

Coming back to the soldiers surrounding him who are Sikh soldiers; this has brought in the scrutiny of members of the community for the movie but also does not seem to be doing justice to actual historical facts. So while this movie is catering to the Malay audience, it may not be doing the same for others.
The movie takes us through the hero’s journey as he fights off against the British soldiers while trying to bring the same enthusiasm from the people around him. And I have to say that the scenes consisting of Malaysian martial arts were quite impressive and a pleasure to watch.
The movie will definitely get up the patriotic spirit of the Malaysian audience and will be a pleasure to others as well. But because of certain elements like the Sikh soldiers and messed up historical facts, it will also be spoken against.

Altogether, this is an entertainer with historical figures that also sways away from facts for the sake of the movie. The fight sequence will be well-liked because their martial arts is different from what we usually see but it is hard to say the same for the story itself.
And the ending is not really satisfying and was more like a bad cliffhanger which was maybe for a sequel.

The movie is a good watch if you overlook certain things and is perfect for those who are in the mood for a patriotic movie. However, it is not a must-watch movie.
I personally have mixed reactions towards the movie and without wanting to hurt anyone, I would suggest a skip on this one.

History says that the Sikhs were employed as soldiers and as soldiers they had to obey orders from the superior. Racist issue does not rise here. The movie portrays the British as ruthless and the Sikh soldiers were just following orders.

Sikh were British soldiers, just because you can’t swallow bitter truth does not make it unhistorical facts.

Deployment of Sikh soldiers by British could be true in Muslim based colonized countries. Anyway is just a movie even the legendary award-winning Braveheart movie was totally inaccurate / BS, but turn out to be one of greatest patriotic/war movies.

Badly written script. Historically inaccurate even for a fictional film. Good fight scenes but that’s about it really. Only watch if you have time to waste.
