MasterChef India Season 7 Episode 3 Review: Unique Dishes Take the Stage in This Episode

MasterChef India Season 7 Episode 3 continues the winning auditions for the cooking reality show, which gives aspiring home cooks a chance to show off their talent on the silver screen and make a name for themselves. Returning as judges Vikas Khanna and Ranveer Brar are joined by Garima Arora, the first-ever female chef to be a judge on the show.

The second episode is titled ‘Dil Ki Awaz’ and the synopsis reads as – A nationwide quest to find the best ‘home cook’ draws out some of the most brilliant chefs from across India. The judges sample recipes from various cuisines that the contestants prepare in their search for India’s ‘MasterChef’. The show is produced by Endemol Shine India and it is directed by Neeraj Shetty.

The episode starts off with auditions in Delhi and the first contestant to come on the show is Kamaldeep Kaur, a mother who started a culinary journey while trying to make her kids eat healthy food. From trying to sneak the vegetables into their favourite food, she discovered a talent to create a new menu.

She named her dish ‘Khatti Meethi Yaadein’ and presented the dessert which was made of spicy tomato jam, yoghurt shrikhand and oats crumble. The judges liked how they could taste various flavours of the ingredients and how she layered them with soft to crispy textures. She got the first apron of the episode and comments, that it felt like a song from Chef Vikas, and shared the good news with her elated family.

The second contestant came from Lucknow, with his dish named Mast Malai Mustard Macchi. Sachin Khatwani is a cloud kitchen owner and brought pistachio-crusted sea bass with Kasundhi mustard sauce. The judges were really impressed with his dish, despite not having any professional training in the field and even called up his mother to give the good news.

The third contestant was one of the most adorable ones and instantly won everyone’s hearts. Urmila Baa aka 78-year-old Urmila Asher is a known Youtuber who has even taught Chef Garima to make the best Khakra and today she brought something from Gujarati Cuisine. If her words weren’t enough to impress the judges then her Gujarati Patra certainly did, with its freshness.

The fourth contestant took us to Assam auditions where the judges were welcomed by Santa Sarmah and her generous hospitality, as she gifted each judge something traditional. She even brought the ghost pepper which is dangerous to even touch with bare hands. Surprisingly, she brought a continental dish, which she had never even tasted before.

Giving sushi an Indian touch, she presented three types of sushi – butter chicken filled, Sesame chicken and coriander chicken filled. Even though she hasn’t experienced the original taste, she recreated it perfectly and thus took away the apron. The next contestant also offered a new twist to the traditional dish.

Subhojeet, who is an engineer by profession presented coconut crusted fish roll which was stuffed with Vietnamese chicken curry. Chef Vikas commented how his dish had such layers and didn’t even need a sauce, as it was a complete package in itself. Securing a spot among the selected contestants, we meet the last contestant of the episode.

Gurkirat Singh brought a Thai dessert, recreated in his own style. He brought sticky coconut rice with raw mango, but instead, he created coconut mousse and for mango, he transformed into jelly. The textures and balanced sweetness left a sweet spot in Chef Vikas’s heart and made Chef Ranveer agree to his selection for the show as well.

Final Thoughts: MasterChef India Season 7 Episode 3

As seen from the preview of the next episodes, there will be 36 selected contestants. Thus the round of auditions will keep on until all 36 are selected. However, as I said earlier, I wish I could learn more about the food along with each background story. It looks like they are just trying to make the audience feel empathetic with relatable stories but forget that we should be focusing on the food lying on the table.

MasterChef India Season 7 is currently streaming on SonyLIV and a new episode will be released from Monday to Friday at 9 PM.
