MasterChef Australia Season 13 Episode 13 Recap: Simply Staple

In the previous episode, Maja fails the pressure test and has to bid goodbye to the show. In MasterChef Australia Season 13 Episode 13, the contestants have to win the Mystery Box Challenge to get into the immunity challenge round. Judges Andy Allen, Melissa Leong and Jock Zonfrillo, had something interesting planned for them.

During Mystery Box challenges in the past, we have seen the judges giving contestants distinctive fruits/vegetables/meat paired with some condiments. However, in the latest episode, they decided not to complicate the challenge for the home cooks and give them something that everyone has at home.

The contestants were given the staple ingredients for MasterChef Australia Season 13 Episode 13’s Mystery Box challenge. The Staple Ingredients Challenge consisted of different flours, eggs, salted/unsalted butter, cream, sugar, olive oil, milk, and apple cider vinegar.

But the episode had a twist that worked in favour of the contestants. Each contestant can choose 2 ingredients from the garden to elevate their dishes. The happiness on the cooks’ face was clearly visible as they almost danced with joy. From fruits to vegetables to leaves, contestants picked up anything that will help with their dish.

The judges gave them 75 minutes to finish the cook. Then, among the 19 contestants, Andy, Mel and Jock will choose the top 5 dishes that will fight for immunity in the next episode. From dessert (mostly ice cream) to savoury items, all types of delicious dishes were made using just the staple ingredients.

The top 5 dishes that made the judges’ tummy happy belonged to Depinder, Therese, Kishwer, Dan and Conor. Despite Andy and Jock having less confidence in her dish while cooking, Depinder still decided to make rosemary ice cream with poached apples. When the judges tasted it, they couldn’t stop raving about how wonderful it was.

Therese decided to cook something that has been made in her family for generations. So along with basil ice cream, she served crispy golden roti with chilli caramel. It was the right amount of sweet, crispy and buttery to taste. Another winner dish belonged to Kishwer. She made pappardelle rolled out with basil leaves, topped with blow torched ricotta and a tomato broth. It is something she serves at home to her kids. So it was another emotional cook for her.

Conor made Lemon Myrtle Olive oil cake with Fig leaf ice cream, and Dan served the simplest and one of the most delicious dishes – Ricotta Ravioli with society garlic broth and basil oil. By the end of MasterChef Australia Season 13 Episode 13, all three judges were happy with these 5 dishes and decided to send them for the immunity challenge.
