Low Country The Murdaugh Dynasty: Murder, Fraud and Deception

True crime dramas are just the thing everyone wants to watch nowadays and with Low Country The Murdaugh Dynasty, HBO Max seems to be on a good start. For the ones who do not know, the Murdaugh family used to be one of the most influential families in the legal system of South Carolina until they weren’t anymore due to the horrifying accusations and revelations that came with the dynasty’s growth.

Similar to the way how HBO Max’s The Staircase begins, Low Country The Murdaugh Dynasty starts with a 911 call were we here Alex Murdaugh, the central character of this docu-series informs the authorities that he has just come home to see his wife and son lying dead after being shot. It is established that we are here in this documentary to deal with a homicide case and, thus, begins the story of the Murdaugh Dynasty.

Over the course of three episodes, we reel back to the history of the family and how they became influential in the Low Country region. With the progress of the story, we meet Alex Murdaugh, the fourth in the wealthy generation of lawyers being accused of a certain number of deaths, which can potentially be murders committed by him ranging from 2015 to 2021, with the murder of his wife and son being the most recent one.

In true documentary fashion, interviews with friends, colleagues, neighbours, police and investigators unfold to offer us a picture of what the Murdaugh family looked like from the perspective of different people and what it actually was. Hidden truths and secrets that were buried under the pressure of money and threat come up as the family gets identified as one that commits organized crimes. But, that is not all the series has to offer. It goes beyond the death of Alex’s wife and son, his trial and more to show us the aftermath of the situation where he received hate that made his life miserable.

Low Country The Murdaugh Dynasty: Final Verdict

HBO has always been excellent with its shows and documentaries and Low Country The Murdaugh Dynasty is just another feather in their cap. With that being said, the complexities of the family are something that really cannot be explored in over a course of three episodes and if it was expanded to a 6 or 8 episode series then maybe the audience would have more time to delve deeper into the cases put in front of them on the screen. The pacing sure is well executed but, a little extra on this topic surely would not hurt anyone.

Nonetheless, the show is certainly fascinating and interesting. It is well-directed and shot and helps us understand the workings of the world of law and crime and how they go hand in hand with fraud, murder and more.

You can watch Low Country The Murdaugh Dynasty, streaming now on HBO Max.
