Love Next Door Episode 3 Recap
The episode opens with a flashback to Seung-hyo and Seok-ryu’s younger days, revealing a pivotal moment in their relationship. Seung-hyo is participating in a swimming competition, a significant event for him, but neither of his parents—his diplomat mother and doctor father—can be there to support him. In the stands, Seok-ryu is the one person cheering for him with unmatched enthusiasm, emphasizing the depth of their bond despite their frequent bickering. Buoyed by her encouragement, Seung-hyo wins the race.

Back in the present, Seung-hyo senses that something is not quite right within his family. At work, he’s introduced to a new client with plans to construct a high-end retirement community for the wealthy. However, his thoughts are elsewhere—he’s more interested in a design competition to rebuild the gymnasium at his old school, the very place where he once swam.
Meanwhile, Seok-ryu, in her usual quirky fashion, creates a daily schedule for her unemployed self, filled with activities like gaming, daydreaming, watching TV, and napping. She tries to entice Seung-hyo to join her in reading a comic, but he humorously brushes her off. Later, though, he and Mo-eun accompany Seok-ryu to the bookstore before they each head off to work, leaving Seok-ryu to ponder her next “activity” in her self-imposed free-time schedule.
The following day, Seok-ryu unexpectedly bumps into her former homeroom teacher, now the principal of her old school. While helping the teacher with a delivery from her parents’ restaurant, they run into Seung-hyo, who’s visiting the gymnasium as part of his work on the design competition. During their conversation, the teacher mentions Seok-ryu’s previous job. Instead of correcting the misconception, Seok-ryu finds herself giving an impromptu lecture to the students as a successful alumna. However, when one of the students asks her what her childhood dream was, Seok-ryu is left questioning her own past aspirations.

After the lecture, Seung-hyo persuades Seok-ryu to help him search for a time capsule they buried with their childhood friend, Mo-eun, a decade ago. Despite their efforts, they can’t find it, and Seung-hyo heads home, leaving Seok-ryu to mull over the memories. Elsewhere, Mo-eun, on her way to the hospital, notices a man directing traffic and declares to her colleagues that he’s her “ideal type.” Unbeknownst to her, the man is actually Dan-ho, a local reporter.
At the same time, Seung-hyo and his co-founder, Myeong-u, meet with the new client to discuss the retirement home project. However, Seung-hyo is uncomfortable with the client’s request to plagiarize another architect’s design, leading to a heated argument between the two founders about the direction of their company.
In another part of town, Seok-ryu meets with a potential employer who is eager to hire her. Seung-hyo happens to witness this and confronts her, urging her to follow her true passions instead of returning to a job she was unhappy in. Seok-ryu counters that finding joy in work is a luxury not everyone can afford, leading to a tense exchange between the two friends. The narrative then shifts to a flashback, revealing that Seung-hyo was once involved in a car accident that ended his dreams of competing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The accident forced him to abandon his aspirations of becoming a professional athlete.

The next day, with some help from one of Seung-hyo’s junior employees, he and Myeong-u manage to resolve their differences. Meanwhile, Seok-ryu grapples with her uncertain future, trying to recall her childhood dreams. Determined, she attempts to locate the time capsule once more but fails again. Her former teacher finds her during this search, and Seok-ryu finally confesses that she quit her job. The teacher offers her encouragement, advising her to choose a path that aligns with her true desires.
As Seok-ryu leaves the school grounds, she encounters Seung-hyo at the gymnasium. He reveals that he has already found the time capsule and playfully teases her about the letter she wrote as a teenager. Seung-hyo then dives into the pool, sharing that it’s the first time he’s swum since his accident. After some playful banter, Seok-ryu joins him in the water, nearly drowning in the process, but Seung-hyo quickly comes to her rescue.
The episode closes with another flashback, showing a young Seok-ryu comforting Seung-hyo after his accident. Back in the present, the two reflect on their life choices and, through their time capsule letters, it is revealed that Seung-hyo has harbored feelings for Seok-ryu since high school.

Love Next Door Episode 3 Review
Episode 3 of Love Next Door masterfully blends past and present, unraveling deep emotional layers between Seung-hyo and Seok-ryu. The flashbacks are a poignant touch, revealing how their childhood bond has shaped their complex adult relationship. The episode’s pacing is well-balanced, with moments of humor, tension, and nostalgia woven together seamlessly. The revelation of Seung-hyo’s past accident adds a compelling backstory that explains his current struggles, while Seok-ryu’s quirky yet aimless routine brings a relatable charm to her character. The emotional depth and character development in this episode set it apart as a turning point in the series.
However, while the episode excels in emotional storytelling, it leaves some plot points feeling a bit unresolved, particularly the conflict between Seung-hyo and Myeong-u, which is resolved too quickly. Additionally, the introduction of new characters and subplots, like Mo-eun’s sudden crush on the mysterious Dan-ho, feels slightly rushed, though it adds an intriguing new layer to the narrative. Overall, Episode 3 successfully deepens the central characters’ arcs while setting the stage for future developments, keeping viewers engaged and eager for what’s to come.
Love Next Door is streaming on Netflix.
