Lazarus Episode 7 Review: A Much Better Episode

The 7th episode of Lazarus or Razaro (ラザロ) was packed with philosophical wisdom and revelations about Skinner’s true motives. Let us see how this episode turned out.

Here, it’s revealed that, in his early years, he was deeply influenced by a commune that still exists today. Now functioning as a religious movement known as the Tower of the Truth, this group has taken a rather unusual path; they worship an artificial intelligence as their deity.

We also discover that Elaina has a personal connection to this cult-like organisation, having been raised within its ranks. Given her background, the Lazarus team suspects this could be a potential hiding spot for Skinner, allowing him to remain under the radar. To investigate without drawing attention, Elaina is chosen to infiltrate the group. Leland is assigned to accompany her for support.

The story takes a darker turn when it’s revealed that the AI worshipped by the Tower is called Naga, and it was created using Doctor Skinner’s brain as a template. This AI was part of an experiment where it was intentionally designed with an insatiable craving for power and dominance. It soon becomes clear that Naga is far from benevolent; its malevolent nature is exposed when it tries to incinerate Elaina and Leland.

Since the AI mirrors Skinner’s own mind, it shares his twisted ideology, including a disturbing desire to wipe out humanity.

Lazarus Episode 7 Review

This episode begins with the Lazarus team playing around and enjoying a fun moment with each other. But things soon get serious when news of the Arctic Circle melting comes in. Something like this was already predicted by Doctor Skinner way before, but no one really paid him any mind. Apart from that, the cult investigation also could not provide any information about Skinner, and the Lazarus team is back to square one.

However, there is one lead that they have from the supercomputer, Naga, which left a code. This code looked like coordinates, and it pointed towards four islands that got submerged because of global warming. Coincidentally, each of these islands was bought by Skinner before it sunk. Seeing that this is a very suspicious move, four of the Lazarus members go to each location and investigate it.

Here, because of no human population, the rate of pollution is exceptionally low, and the beauty of our world shines brighter than anywhere else. This experience makes Christine comment that humans are the ones who are destroying the planet, and maybe Skinner just wanted them to realise that by making them visit this place. However, the mystery is thicker than that, and we get to know that there is a very special reason why Skinner bought the islands.

Apart from that, we also get to know that Hersch had a pretty deep connection with Skinner. It even seemed like she worked with him in the past and hated that he left her behind and planned his elaborate scheme.

Verdict

This episode was a lot better than what we have seen previously, as it delved deep into the philosophical aspect of this world. But the issue is that the characters are not developed enough for us to connect with them. On top of that, the mystery behind Skinner’s objective also seems pretty obvious. I’m sure he’s just a man who wanted humanity to learn how they are destroying their only home planet and thus designed all this to teach everyone a lesson.

But I must agree that this episode was better than the mediocre episodes we have seen previously.
