Kinda Pregnant Review: Less Comedy, More Second-Hand Embarrassment

Netflix’s newest romantic comedy starring Amy Schumer promised viewers a hilarious experience, however, the film turned out to be more embarrassing than comic. This Kinda Pregnant review brings you a look into what the film finally brings for viewers before you decide to give it a watch. The film has some strong comic scenes and interesting dialogues, but all fails in front of the bigger picture of this entertainer.

Kinda Pregnant Review

The plot of the film follows a woman- Lainey, who has always wanted to have a family of her own and experience motherhood. However, when she is suddenly faced with a break-up and news of her best friend’s pregnancy, she cannot help but feel jealous. But it doesn’t just stop here as what she does next is put on a fake pregnancy bump and flaunt it outside, lying to people around her. Things get messier when she accidentally comes across the man of her dreams while flaunting her fake pregnancy.

If you are ready for a flood of scenes that will give you second-hand embarrassment, this is the film for you. These scenes are unlimited, and you cannot stop the frustration that takes over you as you see Lainey do everything wrong. Hoping to experience a good rom-com, it was quite a letdown when all I got was second-hand embarrassment from the lead’s actions.

While the performance of the actors does fall according to the character they’ve all played, it is still not able to cover up the many things lacking in the script. There are dialogues that finally bring in the comedy I’ve been looking for, but they all get covered up by the “comedy” they try to bring by having a group of pregnant women fart or scream in a room together. It is the way these scenes are depicted that makes me frown at the script.

I understand the clash that’s being shown between a main character who idealises pregnancy and motherhood only to come across the exact opposite when she sees real pregnant women during her fake pregnancy. But that doesn’t mean that the realistic side has to be exaggerated in hopes of bringing comedy to the film. The exchange between Lainey and Josh and Fallon with her little moments was more entertaining than the whole film, to be honest. To add on, you can clearly see the chaos that is being forced in the plot to bring out every bit of entertainment possible (only to fail, again).

With a cast as wonderful as this, the film could’ve done a lot better by utilising them to the fullest, but all we get is a film that’s simply a waste of time for viewers. There is no flow in the way things play out, no chemistry between the characters, a messy sex scene (understandable why, but still not appreciated), fake characters that only spoil the whole mood, and more. There is more downside to this film than there is any good which only pushes forth our disappointment.

Summing Up

Kinda Pregnant is the kinda film you’d rather skip than give it a watch. Despite the wonderful cast, the overall picture is a mess and something that is only fit to watch when there is nothing else to watch. The film fails to bring the kind of entertainment I’ve been looking for and surely doesn’t fit the role of a good rom-com.

Watch Kinda Pregnant on Netflix.
