Taking inspiration from Amar Bhushan’s espionage novel Escape to Nowhere (based on true events), Bhardwaj’s movie released on the streamer on October 5, 2023, and it also stars Ashish Vidyarthi as KM’s boss Jeev, Atul Kulkarni as KM’s ex-husband, Navnindra Behl as Maa Ji, Lalit Parimoo, Shataf Figar as Brigadier Mirza, Azmeri Haque Badhon as Hina Rehman aka “Octopus” and others in supporting roles.
With a runtime of around 2 hours and 35 minutes, the movie is available to stream with English subtitles for international audiences. It was produced by Vishal Bhardwaj and Rekha Bhardwaj under the banner of VB Films Production, with cinematography by Farhad Ahmed Dehlvi and music by Vishal Bhardwaj himself.
With an intriguing background of the 1999 Kargil war, the film establishes its dark, murky, deceptive context. Krishna Mehra (KM) is at the centre of the political mess, especially since she is an operative at the Research and Analysis Wing. Being part of the sinister history, the R&AW operatives are equally embroiled in this messy network of deception, and soon enough, one of their own suffers the brunt of the mission at hand. The unprecedented murder of an undercover spy pushes KM to lead a secret operation against the suspicious presence of a mole in the intelligence unit.
Khufiya Ending Explained
Tabu’s Krishna Mehra gathers enough intel. After checking the photos gathered at the secret hideout next door, she also comes across pictures of the foreign associate helping Ravi get his family members citizenship and whatnot. She shares these pictures with her boss, who confirms that the man is David White, the official psychiatrist on the CIA panel. When their find is successful, KM knows just who to target next. She needs Chaaru’s assistance to move forward with her plan, but she’d been distraught since she witnessed her neighbour’s murder in person.

She realised that for KM and her wing at R&AW, people were assets or liabilities, so she decided to cut her ties with Krishna and flee with her son. Krishna, too, catches a sense of what Chaaru is about to do, and she follows her to the subway station but affirms that she didn’t want to stop her, rather just wanted to know where she was headed. And her answer is the Embassy, as she believes they’ll be cornered into taking her and her son in.
Then, she opens up about how all this bloodshed wasn’t something that personally interested her. By bringing Chaaru’s father’s role as an army man into the conversation, she agrees with how the bifurcation of the world into countries is what instigates all this political disharmony, in turn leading to the gore that follows, and that we all, one way or another, contribute to it.

Chaaru returns and gets on the mission’s side again. She stitches a hidden camera into one of her son’s jacket buttons, allowing them a secret look into the discussions between Ravi, now known as Robin and Dr. David White.
As Ravi pushes David for their official documents again, and yet again, he’s asked to wait a bit longer. But in a new development, David mentions that “an old friend of” Ravi’s was visiting and looking forward to meeting him. David reminds him of Brigadier Mirza (also Bangladesh’s Defence Minister), the same man who killed undercover agent “Octopus” at the very beginning of the film.
Brigadier Mirza Returns
As visiting his daughter’s place in the U.S., Mirza personally wanted to thank Ravi for saving his life by working as a whistleblower for them. And so, David invites himself, his wife and Mirza to Ravi’s place for dinner while suggesting that his mother prepare her fabulous speciality mutton rogan josh for them.

While KM’s boss is keen on deporting “Brutus”, aka Ravi, the mole who’d worked against their unit, Krishna comes up with a different plan to make the most out of the opportunity headed their way. For her, the bigger target suddenly switches to Mirza as he’d always been her bigger enemy, especially after what he did to agent “Octopus”, for whom, somewhere deep down, she’d always harboured some feelings. Even after her boss’ direct orders to not jeopardise the original plan in place, she defies them. She recruits one of her older colleagues – a tech expert – to jump back into action and eliminate Mirza.
Plans to Eliminate Mirza
Switching paths, KM approaches Ravi at his residence. Eventually, the entire family is coerced into following along, even “Maa ji”, aka Ravi’s mother, who’d initially influenced him to play both sides. With Ravi’s conversation with David White preserved on film, KM tells him directly that he can easily be deported on the sole basis of this discussion.

But the one way that he could avert this dilemma was if they all went along with her plan to eliminate Mirza. She plays with him emotionally by reminding him how his son believed him to be a hero, and this was his chance to step into the shoes of one, for both his son and his country. If he agreed to follow through, they would safely take him back to India.
The dinner party plans are all set, and the Mohans welcome Mirza and the White family with open arms, with their ulterior motive to poison Mirza. As the gathering is enjoying their wine party, the plan kicks into motion as KM’s associate defuses the power at David White’s house, where his daughter is alone, preparing for her exams the next day. Once she calls him urgently, David goes rushing back and asks his wife to stay at the Mohans’ residence and enjoy dinner with Mirza and the rest.

With one less problem to deal with, the actual vengeful plan takes shape as Chaaru pours the contents of the poison vial into the mutton dish. As the rest are busy exchanging stories and jokes, Chaaru takes Mirza’s glass to refill his drink, and simultaneously, his gaze also travels back to their clock, high up on the wall, on which a secret camera had been installed. Mirza catches on to her suspicious actions, and other excuses pour in.
Suspicion Gets Louder
As they settle for dinner, Chaaru suggests to David’s wife that it’s Karva Chauth and that wives should only take a bite of the prepared food after their husbands. Giving into the cultural rigmarole, she agrees not to eat the mutton. In contrast, Maa Ji states that she can’t do it either, as she’d vowed only to eat non-vegetarian dishes once their citizenship was granted.
Ravi then claims he can’t eat it either because he has cholesterol issues, and the doctor has advised him to stay away from such foods. When he realises they’re all pushing him into the corner to eat the dish alone, he excuses himself to wash his hands, as he wants to eat with his hands.

Tensions rise at the table too, so when Maa ji heads over to Mirza to check if he’d caught on to the suspicious moves, he holds her captive and threatens to slit her throat. David’s wife calls her husband using Ravi’s phone, but till then, as Maa ji was trying to break free, Mirza had already plunged the knife into her throat during the frantic chaos. She starts losing blood, and Ravi races towards her. In the meantime, Mirza makes it to the door but is stopped by Chaaru, and eventually, she’s held at knifepoint, too, but Krishna breaks in and kicks the man away.
He then grabs KM’s throat and tries to suffocate her, but then Ravi starts to lose his temper and prances upon Mirza and bangs his head against the wall, leading to a significant loss of blood, which knocks him down unconscious. He goes back to grab the kitchen knife and kills Mirza for good to avenge his mother. KM tries to stop him, and she and Ravi get into a heated altercation, but she eventually calms him down by reminding him of his son again.

Final Negotiations With David White to Conceal the Truth Of Mirza’s Death
Finally, David returns and is surprised to see all the lights out at Ravi’s place, too. Switching on his flashlight, he sees an unconscious Mirza lying down and her wife being held at knifepoint by KM. Eventually, he and KM get to negotiate. He threatens to send them all off to Guantanamo Bay. At the same time, she reminds him that the U.S. will also be exposed for espionage in India, a country they call an ally. She further reveals that he’d been caught red-handed on tape, so there was no escaping from this mess.
KM then reveals that she purposely let Mirza stay alive to settle things for both sides. The allies strike a deal and overturn the picture of his murder altogether. They plan his body in his bathtub, making it seem like he’d slipped in alone, especially with the wound on the back of his head supporting that story.

With Ravi’s family supporting this act, he’s also secretly snuck back into India, and Jeev, KM’s boss, welcomes him back happily. On the other hand, KM and Chaaru are out on their own, and they get to discussing KM’s sexuality and how her secrets had caused her to stay in her son’s life like a stranger. Since it’s also his birthday that day, Chaaru advises her to speak to him openly because that would be the best gift she could give him.
Though scared about whether her son would accept her, she still gives in and calls him up. Although the final call isn’t shown to the audience, the ending leaves it up to our interpretation and assumption that she did finally have a heart-to-heart conversation with her son in the end about her classified job that always kept her busy and her sexuality as well, which eventually led to her amicable separation with her former husband (played by Atul Kulkarni) too.
Khufiya is now playing on Netflix.
