Kaguya-sama Love is War Season 3 Episode 1 Review

Rewatch your Chika Dances, prepare your flip phones, and make your way here for another bombastic season of Kaguya-sama: Love is War! For those who have been waiting since 2020, this season started especially well as it began with the ending moments of the previous season. Granted, it wasn’t much of an ending as the show just sauntered off at a leisurely pace with not much of note happening. Some would argue that it ended with a literal BANG and that counts, but it felt more like a mid-season break than a proper ending. Let’s let sleeping dogs lie and talk about this episode.

The first segment of this season was focused around one of the best and most subtle bits of storytelling done in the last season, which was the dynamic between Yuu and Miko. They are both extremely similar people who fight for different causes, and Season 2 executed their arcs to perfection. Seeing Yuu perform his signature sacrifice in the situation that he did was peak comedy and fit his character to a tee. There’s a reason he is one of the most popular members of the cast, and this served as a reminder of that.

Kaguya’s incompetence with technology plays a huge part in the second segment, as she tussles with the reality of, all things, read receipts. The show has always kept its finger on the pulse of youth culture at any given moment, and storylines like this one prove that. It was also one of the more hilarious things to happen in the show, and you know that is a tall order for a show such as this. Everything that the show is famous for, like the romance, comedy, and the mind games, was present and working like a charm.

The third and final segment involved the entire student council participating in another of Chika’s harebrained schemes. If there’s anything we have learned from watching the previous two seasons, it is never to underestimate Chika. Well, that, and never play any games with her because she’s always going to cheat. This was your regular Kaguya-sama hijinks, with Miko finally looking like more of a part of the council. She has had a rough go at things so far, misunderstanding everything happening before her, but she is a fine and well-written character with a ton of potential.

Overall, this is the best start Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai Ultra Romantic Episode 1 could have had this season. It showcased everything the series is good at, whether comedy or romance and executed all of the character dynamics to perfection. The show looks to be going places this season, and we can’t wait. A lot happened in Season 2, but it was also easily the more predictable and formulaic of the two seasons. Let’s hope Season 3 can give us some more meat to chew on!
Verdict
Kaguya Sama Love is War Season 3 Episode 1 was a fantastic start to the latest season of loving and warring. Let’s hope that the series can keep this momentum until the end!
