Hosts: Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin

The stars of Grace & Frankie are the hosts of the show that tends to celebrate the women in comedy. They have been friends for over 40 years and just wrapped up their longest-running Netflix series, Grace and Frankie. Both of them are an icon whom people look up to. They started their show with one-liners like surreal is the new real, hinting at the what-we-already-know past event.

They mention finishing up the seventh season of their beloved show and how far they have come. Followed by answering some of the fan questions from the audience like who impacted them the most in their lives or what is their favourite kind of cheese. Yes, there were questions from every range. After that, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin would introduce the comedian that would take the stage.

The Featured Comedians

The first one to walk up the stage was Heather McMahan who is an actress, writer and social media sensation, known for the film Love Hard (2021), Good Grief and others. She talks about how she managed the stress and panic of being stuck in a pandemic, better than her husband. And how difficult it was to get a pet in that period that when she finally got one, it entered from the sunroof of her car which looked like the scene from Lion King.

Michelle Buteau in Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin Ladies Night Live

The next in the lineup was Michelle Buteau, a stand-up actress and the host of Netflix’s The Circle. She took her sweet time performing her set and knew how to utilise pauses effectively. She mentioned references from the film The Color Purple and said that it definitely needs a remake. Followed by Cristela Alonzo took the stage, she is the first Latina woman to create, produce, write, and star in her own US primetime comedy.

There was also a special appearance by Brooklyn Decker and June Diane Raphael, who also star in the show Grace & Frankie and brought margaritas for the hosts, including the audience. After that, Iliza Shlesinger performed her set which felt like she was rapping at times and expressed her thought on being a Karen. Followed by Tracey Ashley as she put some weight on the fat gain during the pandemic which was relatable.

Anjelah Johnson-Reyes talked about getting old and how complicated the current acronyms are, whereas she is stuck at LOL and BRB. Followed by Margaret Cho who mentioned the Asian hate crime and performed funny mimicry of her mother talking about world events. The last act of the show was done by Rachel Bloom and Eliot Glazer who performed a musical number to end the show.

Final Thoughts: Stream It or Skip It?

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin: Ladies Night Live can be called a show featuring woke comedians who can get a hit or a miss with their set. The stand-up show overall felt like a wrap-up party for the series Grace & Frankie, as often it was talked about. Every comedian expressed their admiration and respect for the hosts as they gestured back at them with love.

In terms of comedy, it was an okay-ish show as it majorly included the pandemic jokes which are becoming redundant now. We have consumed enough content on this topic while in pandemic and really need some fresh jokes from the stand-up comedians on such comedy specials.

  1. Ahhhh stuff it. Its more than an average comedy show. Your writing is 2 to 3 stars im pretty sure you’re just disrespectful and critical of everything.

  2. You were being generous 1 star at best. Not one WOKE LIBERAL was remotely funny. Dave Chappelle now that’s a comedian. This show was an hour no one can get back.
