Is that a cheeseburger or is it a cake? We all have seen those memes & viral videos where you have to guess whether the object is real or is it a cake that looks identical to a real-life object. Often time we have guessed it wrong but the satisfaction & look of amazement you get when that handbag turns out to be a cake is really enjoyable.

What is Netflix's new reality baking show Is It Cake? about?

This is the whole premise of this baking cum reality game show. 9 skilled cake artists compete against each other to create cakes that look like daily objects, with the end goal of fooling the judges. In each episode, 3 artists get to compete & the winning baker could take away up to $10,000. In the final episode, the best 3 bakers will compete for a grand prize of $50,000.

The showtime includes 3 segments in it. The first segment is called “Find that Cake”. In this segment, they introduce the theme objects of the episodes, out of which 5 are real objects & 1 is cake. All the contestants get 20 seconds to lock in their answers & the first 3 bakers to correctly identify the cake gets to compete in the next segment.

The second segment is the baking contest where they have to create cake replicas of the items that they have chosen, in 8 hours. The cakes don’t need to be identical but need to fool the judges that are invited to spot the fake. In between the baking, the host brings in decoys of the chosen objects which they would use to showcase with the cake to the judges on the cake wall.

In each episode, 3 judges are invited which mainly includes celebrity chefs like Ronnie Woo, singer & songwriter Rebecca Black, viral meme sensation Brittany Broski & others alike. The judges have to unanimously decide which of the 5 items on the cake wall is fake in 20 seconds. If the judges fail to recognize any of the fake items, then they decide one winner based on taste & the aesthetics or the hyper-realism of the cake.

The chosen winner gets $5000 & moves on to the next segment. Only the winner gets to play the last game called “Cake or Cash” to win another $5000. In this segment, two choices are presented to the contestant on the cake wall. The contestant has to identify which sack of money is cake. If they identify correctly they get to take $10,000 home, if they fail the money is added to the amount of the next episode.

The winner of each episode has the advantage of choosing their contenders in the next episode. The themes also change every episode & challenge the bakers to upskill their know how’s. One day they have to create a realistic meat steak & the other they are making bowling pins. It’s interesting to watch how they bring cake, cookies & cream to life.

Is It Cake: Is It Worth It?

Is It Cake? is a definite watch. Stemming from a popular meme, the show is entertaining & light-hearted. It isn’t as drama heavy or nerve-wracking as many cooking shows can be but is enjoyable & drool-worthy. The contestants are amazing at their artistry & feel like you are rooting for your friend in a competition. The host of the show Mikey Day gives Jim Carrey vibes with his comic antics & style of hosting but it isn’t overbearing & will give you a good chuckle at times.

  1. The host doesn’t give a Jim Carrey vibe, he outright tried to be him but comes across as someone trying very hard to be someone he’s not. Makes it unwatchable.

  2. This show is ridiculously rigged BIG !!! time. Andrew shouldn’t have won. The bust cake was amazingly detailed than andrews suitcase and April’s sewing machine cakes i picked both the cakes out. I think they need to get a better host and judges. So unfair show I wont watch again. VERY DISAPPOINTED. I think I stick to food network channel at least they have judges who have experience in the field that they are judging.

  4. A definite watch? Not in my book. It provides a great example of one of America’s biggest problems. Me, me, me at any cost.

First episode, a contestant games the system (fake tomatoes on real tacos) and he’s rewarded with $10,000 and the win. Compare that to the Great British Baking Show where contestants regularly help those in distress. A world of difference. My prediction: One and done.
