Exclusive K-pop contracts are tricky, especially the talks around their renewal; this time the person in conversation regarding the same matter is BLACKPINK’s Lisa. The Lalisa singer’s contract is nearing its end this August, which has initiated debates online around whether she’ll be renewing it or not. The rumour around the mill claims that she’s not planning to come back to YG Entertainment. What exactly does this hold in future for her, or the K-pop girl group?
South Korean media outlets are diving deep into the issue and circulating some noise around it, which may or may not be true at the present moment. It looks like Lisa is still in talks with the agency while the rest of the members, Jisoo, Jennie and Rose have already completed their side of the negotiations and settled back into the nest. The Money rapper, on the other hand, is still juggling with several solo commitments and hasn’t yet jumped into the renewal process. What has come out right now is that her activities with YG Entertainment are “uncertain” post August, which is when her current contract will terminate.
And so, the company had to jump in to silence the noise, and even though their statement doesn’t necessarily clear out the air, the message left behind states that her silence “is because of the tour and personal schedules, and it has nothing to do with the contract status”, referring to the ongoing BORN PINK World Tour. The other girls’ contract talks have been wrapped up “smoothly”, hinting at the greater possibility of them renewing their contact with YG as well.
As always, fans of the group and Lisa herself are divided on the issue and have had different things to say about the whole ordeal online. Not only has the singer contributed to the group’s name in all these years, she’s also built up a distinct status for herself through solo schedules, campaigns, music and other content. She’d recently also dropped a collaborative single Shoong! with BIGBANG’s Taeyang, which again climbed high in the public’s eye. Being one of the highest paid K-pop idols out there, it’s safe to say that wherever she decides to go or do next as per her agenda, her fans are going to follow her lead and be there right by her side.
So to finally answer the BIG question, the talks of her contract negotiation have begun, as reportedly stated by YG Entertainment themselves, which leaves the ball in Lisa’s court. Stay tuned to find out where this tide is headed. In the meantime, the mere rumours of her leaving the agency have shaken things up for the label as their stock prices have started tumbling down.
